ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - A young Newfoundland man who admitted to savagely beating a 16-year-old in August has been sentenced to two years in jail.

Matthew King pleaded guilty to several charges including assault causing bodily harm.

The 22-year-old beat up a 16-year-old boy, sending the victim to intensive care with brain damage and facial fractures.

King says he is a musician, and rapped his apology to the victim's family during his sentencing hearing at court earlier this month.

Judge Greg Brown said Thursday that the song took him by surprise, and while it clearly took some time to compose, he said it detracted from showing any true empathy for the victim.

Brown also urged King to get his drug and substance abuse problems under control.
