SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - A Colorado woman who grew up on a South Dakota Indian reservation has started her own fashion magazine geared toward Native American men and women and non-Native Americans who want to learn about the culture.
Twenty-one-year-old Kelly Holmes is a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe out of South Dakota. Holmes says she was an avid reader of Seventeen and Vogue when she was growing up, but the magazines' models didn't look anything like her and the stories had little to do with her experiences on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.
She says that's why she recently launched Native Max to highlight the indigenous people of North America. The premiere issue is available online and features "America's Next Top Model" contestant Mariah Watchman as its cover model.
