BATHURST, N.B. - The New Brunswick government has reached an agreement to keep a veteran's unit at a nursing home in Bathurst operating.

Social Development Minister Sue Stultz says the arrangement with Ottawa and Atlantic Baptist Senior Citizens Home Inc. will see nursing home beds offered to non-veterans when they aren't being used by veterans.

Under the five-year agreement, the provincial department will resume responsibility for any vacant beds in the unit that aren't needed by veterans.

The arrangement is set to begin in March.

The plan includes a five-year extension period if needed.
