Leslie and Michael not expected to merge when they arrive in Newfoundland

HALIFAX - The Canadian Hurricane Centre says tropical storm Leslie and hurricane Michael are both expected to hit Newfoundland by Wednesday or Thursday.

But Environment Canada meteorologist Jean-Marc Couturier says the two likely will not merge, but rather Leslie is expected to overpower Michael and push it out of the area.

Couturier says Leslie covers a much larger area than the Category 2 hurricane Michael and will likely weaken the storm when they both arrive in the southeastern part of the province.

Couturier says the threat of Leslie hitting Nova Scotia continues to decrease.

He says for the past few days, Leslie has been stalled southeast of Bermuda, which has caused the storm to weaken.

But Leslie has started tracking northward and is expected to regain hurricane strength Sunday.
