CALGARY - Officials at the Calgary Zoo are beaming like expectant parents after their King penguin laid an egg this week.

Since Asa pushed out the egg Thursday morning, officials say she's doing what penguin mommas do, such as holding the egg on her feet under her brooding path and periodically turning it.

Area curator Dr. Malu Celli says while it's exciting and shows the penguins are settling in well at the zoo, they have to brace themselves that the egg may not be fertile.

Celli says that's because Asa's partner, Tut, is very young and inexperienced.

He says incubation can be anywhere from 52 to 62 days and during that time, even if the egg is fertile, there are other dangers.

Other penguins may try to steal the egg, which is a common, or it could get dropped and crack.
