OTTAWA - Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs says it is checking into media reports that a Canadian man and an American woman have been kidnapped in Afghanistan, west of Kabul.

A report in an online publication based in the Afghan capital says the pair were taken by a gunman in Wardak province.

The region is a well-known Taliban stronghold and a centre for criminal gangs that maraud the main highway between Kabul and Kandahar.

No names have been released, but the report describes the pair as civilians who were apparently travelling through the lawless region towards Kabul.
