One dead, one in hospital after B.C. float plane overturns on lake

VANCOUVER - A rescue officials says one person is dead and another is in hospital following the crash of a float plane east of Vancouver.

Capt. Erik Niemi of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre Victoria says authorities don't know what caused the Cessna 172 to overturn on Pitt Lake, which is located near the community of Pitt Meadows, B.C.

But he says the plane was carrying two people and the accident took place around 4 p.m.

Niemi says one person was able to get out of the aircraft and was taken to hospital by medevac, but the body of the second person had to be removed by search-and-rescue technicians during the early evening.

He says authorities also don't yet know why one person was able to escape but the other wasn't.

Niemi says the RCMP and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada will be investigating the incident.
