Big Spring hotel shuttered for almost 4 decades reopens to guests after renovation

BIG SPRING, Texas - A historic hotel in the West Texas town of Big Spring has been restored after being closed for almost four decades.

The Hotel Settles reopened on Friday with a ceremonial floor-by-floor lighting.

Brint Ryan, a former resident and native of Big Spring, restored the building, which was originally completed in 1930. It was abandoned and shuttered in the 1970s.

The hotel was built by W.R. and Lillian Settles, local ranchers who found oil on their land. In building the 15-story hotel, they gave Big Spring the biggest hotel between Fort Worth and El Paso.

Big Spring is about 40 miles northeast of Midland.
