BRAMPTON, Ont. - Police in Ontario say a nine-year-old boy was sitting in his living room Wednesday night watching TV when he was fatally shot.

Peel regional police say Kesean Williams was hit in the head with a bullet that came from outside his house in Brampton, Ont., and died this morning.

Acting Supt. George Koekkoek says police believe the house was targeted, but they don't know if any of the family members was the intended victim.

Koekkoek says Williams, his 15-year-old brother and his mother moved in to that house last week, so police are also exploring the previous tenants as being possible targets.

Police are canvassing the neighbourhood, interviewing hundreds of people, and already have some preliminary descriptions of people who were seen running from the area.

Koekkoek calls the boy's death "unfathomable."

"It is appalling to anyone to have a young child sitting in his living room, enjoying watching TV and to have that happen," he said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.

"That's what we're here to do, is to protect the innocent and in this case we've got a poor child and we're going to do anything we can" to find the suspect or suspects, he said.

The boy was a Grade 4 student at Sir Winston Churchill Public School. Members of the Peel District School Board's critical incident response team have been sent to the school to provide support to students and staff.

A letter has also been sent home to parents with tips on how to help their children deal with the tragedy.
