South Dakota man fined for running fishing tours in Saskatchewan

NIPAWIN, Sask. - A man for South Dakota has been fined $8,400 for guiding American fishermen on tours of the Saskatchewan River.

The Saskatchewan government says Joel Vasek, of Geddes, S.D., was advertising on a the Internet trophy walleye fishing trips to the Nipawin area.

An investigation was started in 2009 after someone complained.

Vasek was convicted of unlawfully acting as an outfitter without a licence, a charge under Saskatchewan's outfitter and guide regulations

In addition to the fine, Vasek has to pay impound fees of $1,000 for equipment that was seized and he is prohibited for holding a fishing licence for three years.
