New England Revolution take defender Andrew Farrell first in MLS SuperDraft

INDIANAPOLIS - The New England Revolution took Louisville defender Andrew Farrell first overall in the MLS SuperDraft on Thursday.

Toronto traded the pick to New England on Wednesday in exchange for the fourth pick and allocation money, which helps it expand its salary cap.

As previously announced, Chivas USA used the second pick to take Connecticut midfielder Carlos Alvarez — adding a player with a Mexican-American heritage.

Alvarez played high school soccer with Luis Silva, Toronto's first-round pick last year.

Toronto, using a pick acquired in a December deal with the Portland Timbers, used the third overall selection to take Canadian midfielder Kyle Bekker.

Bekker, who's from Oakville, Ont., played at Boston College and turned heads at the recent MLS Combine.

Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver entered the draft with two picks apiece in the first round.
