Nova Scotia Liberal leader wants labour mobility in Atlantic Canada

HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's Liberal leader is calling for more co-operation among the four Atlantic provinces.

Speaking to party members Saturday in Halifax, Stephen McNeil said he wants skilled workers to be able to move throughout Atlantic Canada with ease.

MacNeil says certain professions have varying certifications in different provinces and that "makes absolutely no sense."

He says with some big inter-provincial projects on the horizon, all four provinces could capitalize if certifications were streamlined.

MacNeil also said that he's not in favour of merging the Maritime provinces, as several East Coast senators have suggested in recent months.

If MacNeil is serious about this issue he should be lobbying the governments of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland to abolish the offshore oil and gas labour accords . These accords set a manditory percentage of provincial labourers that must be employed before those from out of province get a chance to be hired. If the resource is a Canadian one why are mariners and rig workers from New Brunswick and PEI not allowed to enjoy working close to home , earning a good wage. These accords are unconstitutional and need to be changed.
