Striking Voisey’s Bay workers are heading back to the bargaining table with Vale in the new year.

Last week, the government released its report on Phase 1 of the industrial inquiry into the labour dispute to both sides, who are required to provide a response by mid-January. According to an update on a Vale website dedicated to contract negotiations, the government report contains the inquiry commission’s recommendation on two terms of reference, but the report won’t be made public until Jan. 7.

Following the report, Vale asked United Steel Workers Local 9508 to resume collective bargaining, and talks are scheduled to begin Jan. 5 in Goose Bay.

The government has requested a media blackout, which both sides have agreed to.

I hope the members of the union actually get a vote on what is being offered, instead of the union executive keeping the members out in their effort to get a full-time position for their so-called leader.

David is correct. I have heard a general rule of thumb is: that if the members are on strike for 3 weeks, they have lost more than then the perfect settlement can get them, when it is finally settled - many weeks later. I cannot get over the mentality that some unions have. In today's still very fragile economy, be thankful you have a job. Of course if that job wasn't good enough for you, then look elsewhere. Your contentment in a job is your responsibility and no one else's. BTW neither party looks good when strikes go on for more than a week or 2

Those workers have each lost more money than they will ever possibly make back in their careers, no matter how generous a settlement they might one day achieve. The fact that they weren't exactly being 'abused' or badly paid to start with adds to the idiocy of the situation. The union movement today is a totally corrupt system that preys on the traits of militancy and ignorance of its membership.
