Province gets $10M from tobacco settlement

The province received $10.2 million from a recent $550-million tobacco settlement.

Canada's federal, provincial and territorial governments reached deals with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and JTI-Macdonald Corp. April 13.

Ottawa filed a suit against the companies in 2003 over the illegal movement of tobacco in the early 1990s.

It was alleged the firms had exported Canadian cigarettes to the U.S. knowing the products would re-enter the country without being taxed.

In addition to the settlements, JTI-Macdonald pleaded guilty in an Ontario court to aiding persons in possession of tobacco not packaged in accordance with the excise act. As well, Northern Brands International, a company related to R.J. Reynolds, pleaded guilty to a conspiracy offence.

The actions see R.J. Reynolds forking out $325 million, JTI-Macdonald fined $150 million and Northern Brands fined $75 million.

The governments shared $491 million of the money, with payouts based on an agreed upon percentage.

Newfoundland and Labrador received its portion April 20.

Finance Minister Tom Marshall told The Telegram Wednesday that the money went into general revenues and will be spent on programs and services.

That includes funding for anti-smoking initiatives, he said.

"Of course, we're committed to the health and well-being of our residents on a number of fronts and we'll support initiatives, programs and services that will contribute to that objective," he said.

It's not the first payout the province has received from a tobacco lawsuit.

In 2008, as part of agreements reached with other manufacturers, Newfoundland and Labrador got $22.6 million.

The April settlement includes a protocol to ensure the companies have internal controls in place.

It also requires the company to assist governments fight contraband tobacco.

Marshall also noted government increased tobacco taxes in this year's budget to persuade people not to smoke.

I almost hesitate to even respond, however it is amusing to see how some sort of unrelated topic will cause the - potheads - to come out of the woodwork to espouse their own drug induced agendas.

This is a new one for me cannabis is not addictive and has absolutely no health risks!

There was a time when cigarette manufacturers had similar ideas about their product and through the ignorance of many people at the time look at the mess we now have with cigarette related issues. Are you sure you didn't formerly work for a tobacco company?

Please give us all a break!

Dear Steve: There are several scientific studies on the subject. Not studies done by big marijuana corporations as many tobacco studies were done. In fact Richard Nixon ordered his famous study called the schafer report where his scientists found that it had no detrmental effects on the lungs, it was not lethal, it was not addictive, it did not cause cancers (recent studies show a possible link to testicular cancer however) Naturally, Nixon was quite annoyed and so he scrapped it and sent out a new one. There are documentaries if your too lazy to read but look up scientific journal articles on the stuff and learn... I smoke daily and I have gone extended times without it for work, school, vacation etc. with no withdrawels whatsoever. Smoking however is almost impossible to give up.

Additionally, the ones who make the drug laws break them. In the US for example the CIA moves billions of Cocaine alone into the us a year from South America. They also imported billions of opium from afghanistan until the taliban burned the crops as they were not helping afghanis. (6 months later we invaded the country and opium production is at an all time high funding the CIA and their Proxy wars) Again, do some research before you throw around comparisons to tobacco company workers.

If you believe what your told by government and don't do your own research. You are ignorant the same as with schooling and not questioning what your taught.

There are several benefits to Cannabis. THC can be inhaled as a vapour first eliminating all other combustion products from a joint or bong. (Carcinogens come from these products not the THC itsself)
-shown to reduce risk of Alzheimers
-chronic pain relief (no pun intended)
    -appetite stimulant (AIDS & Cancer)
-Stool softener as well stool hardener
    -remedy for flu, headaches, congestion
-eases symptoms of Parkinsons, Parkinsonia, other Dopamine illnesses
-Better than gravol for an upset stomach.
-anti-depressant. (keep in mind Anti depressants are the leading prescriptions and people are often using them for years and years at a time spending lots and lots of dollars on chemicals when THC is only one chemical)
    -Can diagnose schizophrenia (THC)
-Cannabinol eases sympthoms of schizophrenia (THC stimulates existing ones, research COMP Gene. Nature of Things did it once) I would also like to note that THC has been artifically selected as the dominant chemical because it gets you high and canabidol does not so it has been artifically selected to be lease abundant in the plant. A purely canabidol plant would be a cure for schizophrenia

When will this country come to its senses and legalize Canadian Cannabis and tax it? It would generate far more revenue than smokes and you wouldnt have to waste money for addiction help with the stuff since its not addictive. And it wouldnt drive up healthcare costs because it doesn't cause cancer, lung disease, emphysema, lymphoma, etc. and it isn't lethal whatsoever.

Wouldn't have to worry about it going south of the border and coming back untaxed either. As it is now, it goes south of the border (Where it is more expensive) and is traded for cocaine (where it is cheaper) and sold in Canada. In fact, the cocaine trade in Canada is driven directly by the Cannabis trade as it flows south of the border in exchange for cheaper and more potent Cocaine.

I agree with you anon, but what would the police do if it is legalized, no photo op's of a couple of ounces of weed and pellet guns to show the public how they are winning the war against drugs.
