The Nain volunteer fire department was called to the house around 7:45 p.m. where someone had reported a fire.
When they arrived the fire department found a woman on the front steps and sent her to the local clinic for treatment of smoke inhalation and non-life threatening injuries before trying to douse the fire that had wholly engulfed the house.
Officers were told that there were three people in the house — a 50-year-old man and two children aged two and four.
All three are from the same family. The woman is also believed to be a part of the family.
The fire had already spread to a neighbouring house and despite fire crews’ best efforts they couldn’t put it out.
No one was home at the neighbouring house.
Both homes were completely destroyed by fire.
Today firefighters are still at the scene dousing hotspots at both homes.
Investigators from the RCMP forensic identification and the fire commissioner’s office are currently enroute to Nain to assist with a full investigation.
The cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.
Names of the deceased are not being released pending positive id and notification of next of kin.
