Missing Woman

As a longtime friend, Susan Follett admits she’s just as shocked as anyone about the disappearance of Ann Marie Shirran.

32-year-old Ann Marie Shirran went missing from her home on Brennan Field in Kilbride Sunday night. RNC have broadened efforts to try to locate her.

A former Steady Brook resident who was previously known as Ann Marie Baggs, the 32-year-old has been missing from her home in Kilbride since July 18.

Follett and Shirran first met as Grade 3 students at Humber Elementary, and the pair went all the way through school together until their graduation from Herdman Collegiate in 1996. The friends stayed in touch over the years and were most recently in contact when Shirran visited the area around Christmas

“She’s a wonderful person,” Follett said Tuesday. “Kindhearted, outgoing, energetic; just very vibrant. It’s a total shock. It’s nothing we would have expected at all.”

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary launched an extensive search of the area around Shirran’s home in the Goulds and eventually expanded its efforts to include a search via rescue craft in the Petty Harbour-Long Harbour area.

Ground search called off

The ground search has since been called off and the RNC major crime unit has become involved in the investigation.

The RNC has recently received a tip from the public that someone matching Shirran’s description has been spotted on the west coast of Newfoundland.

While Follett remains hopeful that her friend will eventually return safely, she said as the days pass without any news she’s beginning to fear the worst.

“Every hour that ticks away is not good,” she said.

“Something obviously has happened to her. She’s not gone by choice, I personally don’t feel that way.”

Much of this belief revolves around the fact that Shirran has a son, Moses, who recently turned one and who is loved very deeply by his mother.

“She would not leave him,” Follett said. “Every couple of weeks she’d be sending new pictures of him and that sort of thing. She dearly loves him.”

In an effort to spread the word about Shirran’s situation, Follett said plans are in the development stage for a gathering in the city.

“Myself and a few other friends of hers are trying to plan either a candlelight vigil or something just to heighten the awareness of it all,” she said. “We’re still trying to iron out the details on that.”

Shirran is described as around six feet tall and 170 pounds with shoulder-length brown-auburn hair and blue eyes. When last seen, she was wearing a white sleeveless top, flip-flops and black pants.

Anyone with information about her whereabouts or disappearance are asked to contact the RNC at 729-8000.
