Five people were injured Thursday evening following three separate accidents on a 500-metre stretch of the Outer Ring Road during heavy rain.

Two accidents happened within minutes of each other with a one-vehicle rollover sending one person to hospital and a second two-vehicle accident about 500 metres away injuring four people.

Both occurred in the eastbound lane.

While none of the injuries was considered life-threatening, firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to help remove passengers in the two-vehicle accident.

As emergency personnel attended to the first two incidents, a third vehicle containing four young people rolled over an embankment in the westbound lane, in the same area.

There were no serious injuries in the third accident.

Traffic was backed up for about an hour as the scenes were cleared.

Capt. Ron Bailey of the St. John's Fire Department said the heavy rain and wet road conditions were the likely cause of the accidents.

The rain was swift and heavy. The ruts and driver stupidity both contributed to the accidents. If you drive on the Outer Ring, then you know the ruts are atrocious. Add a little rain, and a large degree of stupidity to the ruts and the end result is accidents. As soon as it started to rain yesterday evening, I could hear the sirens going -- it was amazing! and I thought -- here it goes -- car accidents everywhere cause we have a little rain. And ruts are everywhere, -- not only the Outer Ring Road -- try the Prince Philip Drive in the stretch between Allandale and Westerland.

People need to slow down, and something needs to be done about the road conditions. The ruts in the outer ring are awful, and in need of repair before there are more accidents and more injuries!

Capt Ron Bailey should have said stupidity was the cause of the accidents.

Slow down, people!! The posted speed limit is MAXIMUM 100 kph. This means 100 kph during ideal road conditions. When will people get the message that rain/fog/snow etc requires that we reduce our speed accordingly? Vehicles don't just roll over on their own. Be more careful, please!!

    drive it every day

I drive that road every day, it was not wet weather that was the problem it was the ruts in the road. I bet I know the exact 500M these accidents happened. How many times are we going to blame the weather and speed for accidents on that stretch of road when the real cause gets covered up. Yes speed may be a part of the problem but when you get a rut 3 inches or more deep and when that fills with water there are going to be problems. Fix the highway bed, don't just resurface it. The real issue is underneath the pavement.

Weather did not trigger these accidents; driver stupidity triggered them. If one doesn't know the effects of heavy rain on a road then they shouldn't be driving. Just park on that road and watch the commuters heading home; I live in St. John's and if you are going to commute here to work then you should respect the rules we live by. If you are in that much of a hurry to get out then I say stay out and lower the risk of my family, friends or neighbours getting hurt.

I agree with Don. The headline to this story should read " Wet weather and aggressive driving triggers three accidents..."
