The discovery of human remains south of Cappahayden has residents of the southern shore community scratching their heads.
Donna Dinn, mayor of Renews/Cappahayden which is about 100 kilometres south of St. John’s, said her phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the skeletal remains were discovered Thursday night by a camping family.
“Is it scaring people? No. It’s not scaring people,” said Dinn on the deck of her Cappahayden home this afternoon.
RCMP had a small section of bush roped off with several officers on the scene, just off Route 10 south of town, directing traffic past the site. From the highway, a pop up or hard top camper can be seen, just a couple hundred feet from the road.
Sgt. Boyd Merrill of the RCMP said several units are investigating the remains, including forensics sections from both the RCMP and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary which are assisting the provincial medical officer.
Marion Murphy, the Cappahayden postmaster, said residents visiting the post office were speculating about the remains all morning.
“They’re saying that it was found yesterday by two campers that were setting up camp. And they went down this path, and they see the remains on the right-hand side. That’s all they’re saying here now.”
She said people in town are curious to know more details about the identity of the remains.
“Everybody’s wondering the same thing: who it is,” she said. “Is it a man or a woman?”
