Teachers and staff welcomed students back to school today as the study year began for most schools across the province.

Parents escorting students with bookbags flooded many school hallways this morning and the sounds of excited voices and shuffling bodies filled the air as they made their way to auditoriums and classrooms.

In a news release Tuesday, Education Minister Darin King said this school year is kicking off with seven new schools opening and 150 renovation projects in the works.

He said students, teachers and staff will see enhanced learning environments this year.

The schools were not prepared for today's opening! Hazel Wood Elementary had someone cutting the tall grass on opening day and all the children were outside playing. The grass was left on the fields and it was knee deep in most places...Couldn't this have been done yesterday? No cafeteria service until Monday? Doesn't the staff know when school starts? No advanced notice for classroom assignments...pure mayham and confusion!!
