Prime Minister Stephen Harper today said Ottawa was deploying the Canadian military to the hardest hit areas of Newfoundland to provide emergency supplies, assist with medical evacuations and rebuild critical infrastructure ripped apart by hurricane Igor.

Harper toured areas affected by the hurricane today and announced that Ottawa would deploy the Canadian Forces to respond to a call for assistance by the province to address critical requirements in the aftermath of the storm.

Harper was joined by Premier Danny Williams and Senator Fabian Manning.

“Today, I saw first hand the very serious damage caused by Hurricane Igor,” Harper said. “Our government stands behind Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and we will be dispatching Canadian Forces personnel immediately to the hardest hit areas to provide emergency supplies and to assist local authorities with medical evacuations and the rebuilding of critical infrastructure.”

Harper visited two of the hardest hit communities, Trouty and Britannia, where he met with families, volunteers and authorities dealing with floods, as well as damage to roads and bridges.

“Newfoundlanders and Labradorians affected by hurricane Igor will face enormous challenges ahead,” Harper said. “But they are facing the aftermath of the storm with their characteristic resilience and determination.”

After viewing the pics of St. Johns, and surrounding areas, I am amazed the flooding of the mighty waterford river. As a former resident, and been through hurrincane Juan, in halifax, having no power for week. Im glad military is coming to help, they did quite job cleaning Halifax, and should be commended when the job is done.

This must be Harper's fondest dream come true, issuing an order for a military deployment of an air, ground and naval invasion of Newfoundland! I am sure the boys in khaki won't have to work too hard to quell any local uprisings or insurrection like they encountered in Haiti a few months back. It's a great excuse for the 75% of the Canadian Navy and 55% of the Canadian Army who come from Newfoundland to get back home to visit the folks around the bay on full pay. Just imagine, the two backward island nations of Newfoundland and Haiti requiring assistance from Harper and the Canadian military to save the day! Maybe the troops who saved the land of "Papa and Baby Doc" will save the day for "Mayor Doc." What a joke!

If we had snow with the storm and called in the Army we would look just like toronto. We don't need the military, more of a pain then a help. Why worry? The government, provincial/federal will come thru and give you lots of money and its not like you would expect anything else. Tough luck if you bought or built in a wrong location, don't see why the taxpayer should be on the hook for your mistake, instead of buying boose you should of bought insurance.

Why sir did your parents not raise you with respect and decency? To say things about Newfoundland as you are, you have clearly not done any research on the province, personally I take great offence to your remarks as I am proud Canadian and Newfoundlander. I don't see your remarks as anything but anti Canadian/Newfoundlanders. We are some of the hardest working people who risk our lives day in and day out to supply your store with fish and produce. I wish you peace in your life and hope that someday you will grow up and show some compasion to those who are in need of help.

Thanks Harper and Williams! Good Job. Our military is stronger than ever and quick to act on this issue. Finally, some competence and good management in government! Stay strong Newfoundland!

Thank you PM Harper. I am a Newfoundlander and hometown is destroyed from the destruction on Igor. They need the support and thank you for giving it to them in these desperate measures. Material things can be replaced and I am thankful very few lives were lost.. God bless Newfoundland.

This is an excellent move by our Prime Minister at such a desperate time I always beleived in and very proud of my fellow Newfoundlanders and their great sense of support for each other and determination to survive no matter how great the risks may be.
