Says Synard's comments are hurting town's chances of landing a multi-billion dollar ship-building contract

Premier Danny Williams berated Marystown Mayor Sam Synard this morning, saying comments he recently made are hurting the town’s chances of landing a multi-billion dollar ship-building contract.

A partnership between Kiewit Offshore and Thyssen-Krupp Marine Services Canada is one of the bidders for a $2.9-billion contract to build joint support ships for the navy, and the companies are hoping to build the ships in Marystown.

Synard reportedly said in a media interview he thinks the province isn’t being active enough in the selection process.

Speaking to the media after the cabinet swearing-in ceremony at Government House in St. John’s this morning, Williams was eager to address Synard’s comments, saying he wanted to “get it off (his) chest.”

He called the Marystown mayor “ignorant,” said the comments were “asinine,” and said Synard “doesn’t count.”

Folks, I would like to say that I stand behind Sam Synard's comments of late. Certainly, there was no malignant meaning behind what he said. He was merely stating that he wants the province's support when it comes to this project. Of course, it sort of goes without saying, and I am sure it is of Danny's best interest as well as the town of Marystown's. Whether it is being discussed amongst members or not, if the town's mayor is not up to date with this information, it isn't ignorance. I understand that Premier Williams has a propensity for outlashes towards the federal government, but I think this was a little less than uncalled for. Mayor Synard was most definitely right in attempting to rally the citizens for provincial support. As much as I want the community of Marystown to prosper and grow, perhaps it shouldn't if it's going to cause this kind of intra-provincial spectacle that the premier is notorious for instigating. The citizens of Marystown should most definitely express their sentiments to the premier for his abhorrence.

What a shame, and that's for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, to hear our leader get before the public like this once again. What is his is problem, grow up and act like a respectable politician. I know that's asking for a lot, but at least keep your school yard antics out of the public eye. Must be a treat to work for a childish bully (bully was not first choice of word to describe) like Dominant Dan. I feel bad for the people of Marystown, pretty bad when your own turn on you at the blink of an eye. And if they think they won't be punished for their mayor speaking up for their best interests, just wait. The kiss of death has been given. I've noticed that the Government of Newfoundland keeps running a commercial on teaching boys how to treat a woman. I think we also need to run one for Government on how to treat citizens. We're your boss and we are not impressed!

Sam Synard has raised Danny's wrath but that doesn't necessarily mean he will regret it. Andy Wells got a fantastic plum of a job, thanks to Danny, even though Danny had previously said that someone should give Andy a good $hit knockin'. At least Danny didn't say that someone should knock the $hit outta Sam.

OK....enough of this...... Danny, we know you're a "tough guy " We know you can "take on" people We know Quebec and Harper are Beelzebub. Danny, you do not have to keep making up for your Little Man Syndrome, or Napolean Syndrome, or Short Man Syndrome. It's clear from your interviews that you suffer greatly from these affllictions. Attacking a mayor for expressing legitimate concerns is lower then low. But then again, that's how you anyone who is not seeing things 100% youre way. It's how you handled Fabian and Elizabeth. Why don't you just give us all a break and resign and move out of the province. I don't care where. You're pitiful.

The headlines always hide the story. someone has to say the mayor spoke to soon. The permier is following course and already is being cut down. let the dock prove its worthy before before blaming the permier if they don't get it. because that's where it will go.

Doesn't everyone in Canada have freedom of speech? Wasn't that right won by the men and women who fought and died in war for each and every one of us? Isn't it enshrined as well in our Constitution? Time more people stood used that right without being called names by those who supposedly are leaders?

Dannie Williams is one of the most successful business people in the province with a history of handling large deals. Danny Williams business accumen > business accumen of the mayor of a town of 5000 people. I'm guessing that Danny Williams had asked that Mayor Synard stay out of things and let the province handle it. The guy likely refused and so Williams has to go public. Were people talking about how to run a very small town, I might take Synard's advice over that of Danny Williams. When it comes to a $1,000,000,000 deal, I'll do the opposite. Why anyone else would think differently is beyond me.

I am not living in NL but saw Mr. Williams on the news and went to this paper for more details. Must say I was shocked that he would publicly berate someone in this fashion and concluded this is dangerous to democracy . Mr . Williams is acting like he owns the province and is not open to any feedback. I think he owes the mayor an apology and should set up a meeting to discuss the frustrations experienced by the people in Marystown. Mr. Williams will be a fool to think this is one man's opinion.

It is about time someone put Synard in his place. Synard is the type of politician that will sell his sould for a better position. Remember, it was Synard who tried for the Liberals and Tories but was denied by both; he even went as far as to run independently and said that he would join any party the people wanted (talk about desperate). Igor did bring something to my mind and that is just how few new or young politicians we have running our towns. Listening to the reports we hera the names of the Mayor's: Fitzgerald in Bonavista; Best in Clarenville; Synard in Marystown and the list goes on. What does any person have to offer after 15-20 years in the position, oput Towns need new blood and fresh ideas and we won't be getting it from these "has-beens". In closing, it seems that Synard has finally meet someone who will tell him that his Chicken Little scenario won't work here.

Bring on the election. Danny needs to be shown the door. Enough of this little tyrant and his temper tantrums. He can dish it out, but he sure can not take it. Very poor character trait in a leader, thin skin. Back to your drivel Williams, we have had more than enough of you.

We can put all kinds of energy into stopping school yard bulling, but we can’t seem to teach our “leaders” to stop bulling us.

Communities have to fight for what they get and no freebies from the PC gov. Sam is right but Dan Millions gets his back up and goes before the microphone with the same phrase"That couldn't be futher from the truth" and he shrugs his shoulders. I mark it every time when someone hurts his feeling. Poor Dan. He acts like a spoiled kid when he don't get his own way.

The pure arrogance and condescension of saying Synard, or any citizen, "doesn't count" is completely repugnant. Who's the "ignorant" one?

Be very careful Sam or your town and district will be punished like Straits-White Bay North was with the Air Ambulance. Seems like our dictator has no problem fighting with the federal government, provincial governments or the people of his own province. His quest to be the most popular and beloved premier of Nfld and Labrador is slipping away each time he turns on us.

hahaha Can anyone say DICTATOR? Never mind telling us what the province IS doing to bring these contracts to Marystown, let's just name call and belittle. Other than the province being able to pump some oil to help the budget, Danny has not done anything here except crap on anyone who wishes to voice an opinion, set his relatives up with government jobs and fixate on Quebec. What a joke.

Danny Williams was too busy shooting 22 Minutes that Friday that Hurricane Igor hit Synard's area and other areas totally devastated, so Synard isn't that far off the mark with his comments at all. So, Danny Williams of all people wants to talk about grandstanding and vanity, does he??? Furthermore, why can't anyone level legitimate criticism at this fellow? The Napoleon complex of his is something that has annoyed me, to put it mildly, since he began his autocracy. I will scrutinize his directives and actions and I will after doing so criticize him publicly all I want. It is imperative that when we, as citizens of this province, have legitimate concerns and gripes with Williams and his government of yes men that we be vocal. If not, we do not have a democracy. Williams has to learn that he is not the boss of a company here, but of a pluralistic democracy where we elected you and therefore as your employers have every right to criticize you when you are not doing your job, overstepping your bounds, and the like - which happens ALL the time with the appalling anti-Quebec campaign of late as a key example. The "ABC Campaign" is another and made me embarrassed to be a Newfoundlander.

What's the problem with Williams? He can't seem handle any kind of dissent or criticism. This is a democracy afterall, and quetioning the government is what democracy is all about. Futhermore, if Williams thinks that Synard doesn't count, then why is Williams shooting off his mouth in the first place?

While I like much of what Premier Williams is doing for my province, these outbursts against other fellow residents do absolutely nothing to foster good provincial municipal relations. If the Premier doesn't like what Mayor Synard has to say, then call him up and let him know that. This public beratement, the use of the adjectives assinine and ignorant, and the statement that Mayor Synard "doesn't count" are uncalled for. It is reminicent of the days of Andy Wells berating City Councillors.

He called the Marystown mayor “ignorant,” said the comments were “asinine,” and said Synard “doesn’t count.” Well, Dan.......Let's put it this way........If you have a tie for your member in Maystown........Mr. Synard's vote will "count" very much.....and most likely "against' you.......So if I were you I would reconsider that statement........And would that NOT be ironic, IF that actually turned out to be the case????? And who would feel like an @SS then?? Noi!!!

I guess Danny doesn't like to hear the truth. I agree with Sam when he says the provincial government isn't being active enough in the selection process, just look at how many contracts we have lost out on. I suggest Danny use his energy more efficiently and put it into pursuing employment opportunities for the province and stop this divide and conquer B.S. to keep the focus off of the job he isn't doing. Is this what you people call good governing? Shouting and yelling insults at our own when we are exposed for doing nothing? These playground antics have to stop. Hey Danny I'll meet you out by the bike rack at 3 o'clock, and you can yell all you want because you don't scare me, I am a doer not a talker. Sam was right for calling him on this.
