Christopher Lee Newell’s bail hearing set for today

Christopher Lee Newell, 30, appeared in provincial court in St. John's Wednesday afternoon. He's accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's house Tuesday night, trying to strangle, choke or suffocate her and then hitting her with his car.

A St. John’s man suspected of a serious assault on a woman early Tuesday night is scheduled to have a bail hearing today.

Christopher Lee Newell, 30,  made a brief appearance in provincial court Wednesday afternoon.

Duty counsel Lauryn Chafe told Judge Colin Flynn that Newell will need time to consult with another lawyer. Flynn agreed to postpone the matter for a day.

As Newell was led back to the holding cells, he acknowledged family  members outside the courtroom.

Newell’s mother declined The Telegram’s requests for an interview.

Newell was arrested around 2 a.m. Wednesday, shortly after his ex-girlfriend showed up at Royal Newfoundland Constabulary headquarters to report the incident.

About 10 p.m. Tuesday, Newell allegedly broke into her home on Canada Drive in the west end of the city and “tried to either strangle, choke or suffocate her,” according to Const. Suzanne FitzGerald, who declined to give more details.

FitzGerald said the woman managed to get away, but Newell chased her outside. He then got in his car and drove up on her front lawn and hit her with the car.

“There was evidence of tire marks on the front lawn,” FitzGerald said, “as well as damage to a wooden walkway.”

The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening, but FitzGerald said they were “visible.”

Officers picked Newell up on Newtown Road, in the downtown area.

Newell faces three charges — attempting to commit an indictable offence by choking, strangling or suffocating the woman, assaulting her with a weapon (a car) and breaking and entering her house.
