Premier describes comments in email as ‘vile’

Premier Danny Williams has responded to an email in which it was asked if he was bipolar or potentially suffering from syphilis, calling the comments “mean spirited” and “vile.”

The email was written in 2009 by then-Business Post editor Craig Westcott. Sent to the premier’s office, it has come to light since Westcott’s appointment as communications director for the provincial Liberals.

The piece of correspondence was called a joke Wednesday by Liberal Kelvin Parsons.

“What the Liberal party does with regards to who it hires is their business. We have no control over that, nor any say in it,” Williams said.

“From my personal perspective, it became quite obvious to us late last week or earlier in the week that Mr. Westcott had indicated that he was going to be directing the communications, he was going to be actively involved in policy for the Liberal party and his own personal agenda was against me, personally, and that’s been ongoing for some time, so that wasn’t new news to me,” he said. “But I did feel it was important that the people of the province know who they’re dealing with and what they’re dealing with when this man is now an integral part of the official opposition in this province.

“His behaviour has been vile, for want of a better term. You know, the statements that he made in the email were very, very offensive. Not only offensive to me but offensive to a lot of people. Then, when he and the Liberal party came back and said that this was really a joke, that just made it worse.

“Once they’ve said they made a joke, what they’ve done is they’ve offended anybody or any family or anybody in the province and the associations who try to better issues of mental health.”

“His behaviour has been vile, for want of a better term. You know, the statements that he made in the email were very, very offensive." - Premier Danny Williams

Williams called the comments “mean spirited” and said he felt it was important to point out Westcott’s previous actions.

“I don’t want the caucus members in my party subjected to this kind of vile behaviour. I think it’s important that the people in Newfoundland and Labrador know that, over the next 11 months, this is the direction that the Libral party and the official opposition are taking and that’s really not in the best interests of this province.”

Williams made the statements after taking questions with President of the Nunatsiavut government, Jim Lyall, on a landmark joint cabinet meeting taking place at the Confederation Building in St. John’s this morning.

To Kevin O'Brien...your actions are just as despicable as Craig Wescott's. I have witnessed your antics in the House of Assembly and some of the things you have shouted across the floor are far worse than what Westcott wrote. Maybe the Newfoundland public who are so blinded by Danny's aura would not know this about you. I doubt if anyone believes (PC or not) you brought this to the public without the premier's knowledge but yet you will get on a provincial media and say you did it of your own volition. Think about it...why do you think you were chosen to make this public? You're a lackey and expendable. That's character for you! I hope we have heard the last of this from you.

Not excusing Westcott's email which was in poor form, but honestly, in comparison to DW's usual bully tactics (of which the latest is another example), this email is nothing. DW needs to grow up and act like a man, rather than putting down folks who disagree with him.

RANDY wrote "while soldiers are dyeing " Dictionary definition of "dyeing": to color or stain; treat with a dye; color (cloth, hair, etc.) with a substance containing coloring matter: to dye a dress green. to impart (color) by means of a dye: The coloring matter dyed green. " Before you make you negative comments, learn how to spell ! And the comments were "vile" and immature, and pathetic. And I congratulate Mr. O'Brien for making it public! What a great spokesman for the Liberal party, someone with this mentality and attitude towards others leaders ! ! He should be fired ! But no one in the Liberal Party seems to have the guts, or common decency to do so! What's that old saying "Birds of a feather . . . . . . "

FINTIP, how did the contents of the email come to light? Unlike Danny Williams' many, many, many, many, many, many "vile" and "offensive" personal attacks on opponents, ordinary citizens, or people just doing their jobs over the past seven years, Westcott's email — until the recipient leaked it to the press — was made in private.

Far as I'm concerned Mr. Westcott should be fired immediately. I realize that Premier Williams has "attacked" people throughout the country but it was never a personal attack. It was the Premier standing up for the people of this province. While not only did Mr. Westcott try and deminish the reputation of Premier Williams, I feel he insulted any person suffering from a mental illness. I think it's ridiculous that a person who speaks like this would have the nerve to take on such a public position. To make matters worst, the Liberal party said it was a joke? There's no doubt I'm a fan of Premiers Williams but I did have respect for the Liberals, until Mr.Westcott is removed from his position the credibility of the Liberal party is finished for me. I also think Kelvin Parsons shouldn't stand behind this man if he wants to continue to have a say in the politics of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The options are few when it comes to the next election, but when a man criticizes another for behaviour and attitude that he himself shows over and over again it really blows my mind. You'd swear the f... that the province was on top of the world, rich, everything was in order and these a.. clowns had nothing better to do. To all of them I say, grow-up and get to work for crying out loud, if you worked for me you would all be fired immediately! Get over it and start running the so called government that we have. This s..t absolutely blows my mind. Now I am not a so called fan of any politician but Danny williams is no angel, if you disagree with any of his fews he will waste no time in shooting you down or calling you names, etc. So I do believe that there is a deep rooted problem, mentally, i doubt it, i figure it stems from childhood, maybe spoiled or something, but whatever it is it works for him as there are still 80 - 90% of newfoundlanders that for some unkown godly reason think that he is the best thing since sliced bread, wise up people, wise up! People will say that hes there for us because he has the money and don;t need to be doing it, thats a load of s..t also, danny williams is there to leave his legacy, he wants and needs to go down in the history books, it is 100% for himself, if you think anything else then he has got you brainwashed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pierre Neary's is a frequent poster who misses no opportunity to condemn Williams and his government. That's fine. He's entitled. But in equating the language of Williams and Westcott, Neary exposes himself as a desperate, vicious political partisan. Williams might indeed have gone over the top with his comment that Synard didn't count (whether or not Synard's attack on Williams was politically motivated). But in suggesting that Williams suffers from a bipolar condition, Westcott does an injustice not only to Williams but to those people who actually suffer from this mental disorder. Worse still is Westcott's assertion that Williams suffers from a sexually transmitted disease that once led to brain degeneration and a slow, painful death. It is a nasty personal attack almost without precedent in modern politics and certainly one unbecoming someone who owes his keep to the public purse. Having failed in both the newspaper business and politics, Westcott must now bear the mark of a paid spokesman (or attack dog, whichever) whose command of the English language is so poor that he must stoop to gutter talk in order to make a point. Those, like Neary, who defend Westcott's behaviour cast doubt on their own motives and character. Already struck by the unfortunate illness of their leader, the Official Opposition can ill afford to saddle itself with such an inept, ill-temperate and foul mouthed employee tasked with developing and publicly articulating its policies and objectives.

Seems to me Danny was mean spirited and vile when he suggested staff at Eastern Health "should be shot." Very violent suggestion and very insulting to anyone who has been a victim of or has lost a family member due to a crime involving fire arms. What was that saying about people who live in glass houses?

I know that whenever I find something vile and offensive, my own inclination is to wait over a year and a half to react to it.

I thought the same as you Mark, but after thinking about it isn't this a special circumstance? So many average people like us can bash Danny all they want. But if someone says something as offensive as this and then decides to be a part of a political party - who is working on behalf the people of NL, wouldn't you want to know about it?

The word on the street is that O'brien is covering for Danny. The word on the street a few years ago is that Tom Osbourne refused to lie about cancer receptors and was canned. The Williams one man band doesn't have much to choose from once Danny leaves as anyone with a grain of integrity has been booted out. Between the liberals and the tories its like a gong show.

My issue isn't as much with Williams or even Westcott. For kelvin Parsons to dismiss it as a joke and a larf shows his profound disrespect for people suffering from Mental illness or syphilis.

Mr. Wescott only issue a half-hearted apology, seemingly most concerned that his "private" email became public!! And to listen to Calvin Parsons and Roland Butler shrug off the "lark" is even more effensive. Do Liberals they really think that offending those with mental illness is support????

I think that we of NFLD and Lab are acting like spoiled kids in a candy store. Danny Williams can come accross with comments that always has a underlying meaning and gets away with it and now Westcott wants to play with him. Grow up boys..................A joke. Not funny enough.

...but it is okay for Danny to react in the manner in which he did to Sam Synard's legitimate concerns around the future of Marystown. Amazing rationale. Wescott made a stupid error...O'Brien likely lied when he said he released the email without the premier's knowledge...Williams is bully and politics is a dirty business.

I agrre that the comments made by Wescott were inapropriate and an apology was needed. Now the preimer should do the right thing and apologise to Sam Synard.

Funny - not as much fun when the shoe is on the other foot. At least he didn't say WIlliams didn't count, as Danny did to that Mayor in Marystown.

Abraham Lincoln once said "If once you forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem". With respect to the appointment of Craig Westcott as Director of Communications for the Liberal Opposition, the contents of his 2009 e-mail sent to Elizabeth Matthews and the comment made by Kelvin Parsons wherein he attempted to childishly mitigate the impact of the contempt explicitly demonstrated in Westcott's question about the Premier, Lincoln's statement is so aptly applicable today, to both Parsons & Westcott and to the status of the Province's Liberal Opposition. Enough said.

I didn’t like the Wescott email but boy, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. The Premier has made a career of spitting venom at anyone who criticizes him. Williams’ classless behaviour is very well documented over his tenure as Premier and before. Maybe Mr. Wescott should have just said the Premier needs a good s$@t knockin. Minister O’Brien showed himself to be a joke by doing the Premier’s and Ms. Matthews’ bidding. Nothing but a flunky.
