One of their members was overheard saying he would make a better profit if he laid-off staff and did all the work himself. Memo from the staff to this employer " Go Ahead!"

I agree with Alexander, the system is being abused. Where I don't agree with Alexander is on who's inflicting the most abuse. Employers in this province that operate in a seasonal manner rely on EI to ensure their workforces are stable and remain in the community dursing the months that the employer is not operating. These businesses are subsidizing a ready employee pool off the backs of EI contributors. They simply would not be able to attract and retain employees otherwise. EI is a program to assist workers between jobs. It was never intended to act as corporate welfare for employers to protect their employee pool. That's a cost advantage for those employers though that they are not eager to give up. The Newfoundland and Labrador Employers’ Council need to clean up their own back yard. Once that's done, they will have the moral authority to challenge how EI is managed. Until that time, they will remain part of the problem.
