Brad Cabana enters Tory Party leadership race

Random Island businessman and blogger Brad Cabana entered the PC Party leadership race at 11 a.m. today.

Speaking to reporters outside the St. John’s party headquarters, Cabana told reporters he had submitted his 50 nomination signatures from party members, and he had paid his $5,000 nomination fee.

Nominations were set to close at noon today.

Cabana was a mayor in Saskatchewan, but he has not had any formal involvement in Newfoundland and Labrador politics up until this point.

On his blog, he describes himself as a political scientist and former Canadian Forces captain.

His entry into the race will force Premier Kathy Dunderdale to resign as premier for the length of the campaign.

A leadership convention will be held this spring to determine the permanent leader of the PC Party.

I am wondering why some people here are so rude and disrespectful to Mr. Cabana? It reflects poorly, both on people's intellect and manners, to be so nasty to this man. Have some dignity and class, people! I think it is wonderful that Mr. Cabana has offered himself as a candidate, although it is clear that political office is often a thankless post, with many rude and uninformed people eager to take a swipe. Ignorance is disturbing, to put it mildly.

This guy was the mayor of a community of 96 people, this is not exactly experience He is a self proclaimed political scientist - in other words, he says he is one. He has lived in NL for less than 2 years and he claims to have roots here some 200 years back. Methinks that this is a CFA who thinks NLers are suckers and/or needs a CFA to help them.

Although some people seem to be thrilled about the fact that someone is giving Dunderdale a run for her money, I'm feeling a little more cautious - Better the devil you know than the devil you dont. And I really dont think that mayor of a town with a population if 91 people counts as enoughpolitical experience to run the province of Newfoundland & Labrador...

What's the problem? If he is a resident of Newfoundland, complies with the PC party rules and wants to run, he is entitled to do so. As are we all. I am sure there are Newfoundlanders elsewhere in Canada that run for and hold elected offices. Give me a break and stop being so childish.

I agree with Realistic. Grow up Scott. The nomination process has been open and more than fair. The PC Party is not a secret society by any means. Get real. I think that you're just jealous that you'll never be the lady that Kathy Dunderdale is.

Who is this Cabana? Don't you have to be a member of the party in good standing? The Federal liberals imported a leader & how is that working for them? Surely this Alberta cowboy is part of a newfie joke.

I have just one comment about this self proclaimed "idiot". Visit his blog (rock solid politics) and have a look at the individuals who are "members" of his blog. Enough said!

Notice to Mr. Cabana...beware of skullduggery...here's a notice posted to the official site of the PC Party of NL just this afternoon.... "Nominations close for leadership of the PC Party of Newfoundland and Labrador Progressive Conservative Party President John Babb and Convention Co-Chairs Minister Shawn Skinner and Minister Joan Burke announced that nominations for the leadership of the PC Party of Newfoundland and Labrador have officially closed as of 12:00 noon, today, Monday, January 10, 2011. At the time of closing for nominations, there is one accredited candidate whose name will be put forward on the ballot. A second individual delivered nomination papers to the PC Party Office late this morning; these will be reviewed by the Chief Electoral Officer and the Credentials Committee to ensure the individual meets the necessary qualifications for accreditation. If the individual is accredited, their name will then be added to the ballot. The status of the accreditation will become available to the public once the process is completed." Interesting to see what comes of this; what exactly are the "necessary qualifications for accreditation?"; and, what "credentials" does Ms. Dunderdale hold that exempt her?? The silence is deafening today from the usual Tory wags and the media; c'mon, get the story!

Assuming this leadership bid holds, I wonder what the chances are of others "changing their minds" (sound familiar?) once the race heats up! Any efforts in progress to draft Tom-Darin-Jerome yet?

It goes to show how uninformed people are when they think a political party's leadership contest is going to cost taxpayers. It's going to cost the same people who wasted almost $200 000 on Williams' vanity "ABC Campaign".

The photo of Mr. Cabana on VOCM looks very shifty. Is this the work of a Federal Party Leader to have him run? What does Mr. Cabana know about our beautiful province, considering he is a "CFA"- Come From Away? Ms. Dunderdale will have my vote.

It is fun to watch the Conservatives get all tied up in knots over a leadership race that they could not prevent. Realistic - what does deflecting criticism to the Liberals prove except that your a party hack that can not address criticism of your party's democratic deficit. Your party is the one that is in government, that is strong and determined, that has all the money in the bank but has a functionally illiterate leader with out so much as a university degree. Get with it!

Holy moly - why so many negative comments? I was hoping someone else would enter the race so we can get some new ideas flowing. If this man has the passion to challenge for the top spot then good for him! And come on.... lets be honest with ourselves here... no one else wants to be the leader! I hope we get to hear much more about this man since I'm not exactly excited about our current leadership.

Thatta boy, Mike - good support for what is supposed to be a democratic system, not a right of passage. You are a great example.

FYI Folks - Mr. Cabana stepping forward does not cost taxpayers any money, it costs the PC party money. They have to spend funds to host a leadership convention and the front runners have to foot the bill for their leadership campaign. The provincial election come Fall 2011 is what will cost taxpayers the money, not the PC leadership election. Democracy is in the General Election, not the PC Leadership Campaign. The PC's are electing the leader of their party, not the new Premier (he/she has to get themselves elected as Premier) I'm willing to let my tax dollars go towards an election every 4 years because that is democracy. I hope that the the PC's drop in support with a rise in the NDP (they need to get a few seats so we can really see how they work). I hope that Patty Pottle, Terry Loder and John Hickey get the boots.. oh yeah and Steve Kent too... after all he is in it for himself... thats why he crossed the floor to play for the winning team.

Congrats Mr. Cabana; a true act of courage to take on the secret society known as the Progressive Conservative Party of NL. Good luck in your endeavours and hopefully your nomination serves to, at the very least, offer some sober second thought and free debate of opinion as an alternative to the current regime of Tory bobbleheads. In checking the official PC party of NL site just now, I couldn't help but notice that interim Premier Dunderdale's photo is quite outdated and doesn't serve justice at all to her live appearance. She's much hotter in real life; especially when responding to questions.

Excuse me "Mr Free"...i didn't hear any cries when they aclaimed Yvonne as leader of the Liberals this past summer. That party certainly has alot of bobbleheads for sure!! They are even bringing back old Tories like Graham Letto, who was one of the 2 or 3 who could not get elected under "Danny's coattails" Says alot about Graham Letto...lol!! Now all they need to do is rejuvinate Danny Dumaresque and they will be all set. But you know this will make the party stronger...gives them a chance to get together in the spring to prepare for the fall election. I dont think there is any contest. Shame on you for the last comments...if thats the mentality of some people, make no wonder NL is the butt of mainland jokes!! Grow up Scott Free and get a life!!
