Gander — Nearly two years after his arrest, Craig John Blundon, of George’s Brook was sentenced to life in prison — with no eligibility to apply for parole for 12 years from the day of his arrest — for the 2008 death of Francis Ayles of Brooklyn, B.B.

The sentence was handed down today in Newfoundland Supreme Court in Gander.

Blundon, 20, was arrested Feb. 9, 2009, and charged with first-degree murder after the body of Ayles — who was reported missing Dec. 2, 2008 — was found 26 days later beneath a pile of boughs in the woods behind Brooklyn.

In addition to the prison term, Justice Raymond Whalen ordered that Blundon, upon his release, be subject to a 10-year prohibition from possessing firearms, crossbows, restricted weapons, ammunition and explosive substances.

The judge also ordered a lifetime prohibition on any prohibited firearms, restricted firearms, prohibited weapons, prohibited devices and prohibited ammunition. He also ordered Blundon to provide a DNA analysis to police.

Blundon pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case on Jan. 17 of this year.

I have known this young man for many years and find it hard to believe that he would kill someone.
