Port aux Basques —  The wind and blowing snow didn’t keep people like Brenda Pieroway from joining a peaceful protest on Main Street in Port aux Basques to support the Rodgers’ family.

The Rodgers feel Child and Youth Family Services (CYFS) overstepped its bounds after taking their children, in part, based on IQ test results.

About 30 people stood bundled in front of the Family Services office. Some held hand-made signs. Others chanted, “Bring the kids home.” Most cars that drove up Main Street past the protestors honked their horns and waved.

“We just wanted to show everybody that the support of the public and the community is here with the Rodgers’ family and that we all feel there’s been an injustice done and in our hearts we would really like to have those children back home with their parents,” said Mrs. Pieroway, who came up with the idea of holding the peaceful protest.

About 30 or 40 people came out to a meeting on Feb. 5. Mrs. Pieroway said there were a few things on the agenda, including how to get the public’s attention.

“This was the way we decided at the meeting to come up with this peaceful rally,” she said. “We’re not demonstrating – we’re just doing a peaceful rally.”

She said they planned to hold the rally for about 20 minutes, just so everyone in town could see.

“As you can see, we’ve had a decent turnout despite the blizzard,” she said.

Wouldn`t it be great if judges who issue these warrants to remove kids from their homes, search homes etc. would become impartial and not just rubber stamp the order based on the info given to them by some of those idiot social workers and police. I think before judges issue any order they should be sure the info given is accurate or someone will have to pay the price for their stupid actions such as the case at port au basques

Let's play devil's advocate here: what if these parents are struggling with taking proper care and providing for these children, despite having the best of intentions and being very loving. If they need 24 hr a day support in order to ensure the children are cared for properly, are these protesters willing to then volunteer their time if they were to be placed back with the parents? Maybe a few, but for how long would that last? And what would the fate of these children be then??? The children's well-being and health should be put ahead of everything else, including the feelings of the parents.

I hope this doesn't dropped here. I feel that it is time S.S. were made more accountable to the public and that this case was given priority so as to resolve this and get the children back in their home with their parents before the S.S. causes any more mental trauma to these children. I just wish I could have been there to support the parents in the plight to get their children returned .

I think it's really great to see people supporting the Rodgers family. I would like to know why/how these children were taken from their families. I just read that it had something to do with their IQ???? what happened before the children were taken? marion_ny@yahoo.com

It's really great to see people supporting this family, the Rodgers, whose children were taken from them. I didn't quite understand the reason they were taken. Was it because of their IQ??? Is that what I read? I 'd like to ask if there were any prior conferencing with the parents before the children were taken? It's hard to comprehend that they were taken because of their IQ. marion_ny@yahoo.com
