OMG another Conservative Liar. Really!!!!!!!!!!. Are there any Liberal Liars???. Probably not. Mr Simms better things to do with his time, like hanging out at Tim Hortons!!. It looks like had Vic Toews not made the trip to NL then Mr Simms would never had raised the prison issue. Looks like smoke and mirrors on Mr Simmms part. It is quite obvious that a new prison was not a priority for Mr Simms otherwise it would have not taken him 3 years to raise the issue with Vic Toews or did he have more important things do do with his time like making plans for his Gold Plated Pension??. Suck it up Simms. You were caught napping on the job.

Toews comments were stupid and so was Simm's response. Simmer down fellas its just politics and the boys have decided they have to save their cushy jobs by making it look like the other does nothing when in really neither of them has done anything for the public good.

The sharks are circling around Yvonne Jones now that Danny Williams is out of the picture. Roger Grimes and John Efford have both been in the public eye lately. Scott Simms is an intelligent, outspoken, and ambitious politician, who is smart enough to know that he isn't about to get a federal cabinet job anytime soon. We'll see what happens.

Harper's crime agenda will be very expensive. It makes more sense to invest in crime prevention . We need construction jobs in 'Supportive Housing",not building more prisons. We need people employed in Mental Health not as Prison Guards. Investing in crime prevention is much less expensive & there are fewer victims.

No surprise here. You know, in the last election 40% of the population of Canada didn't bother to vote. He only got 37% of the vote in 2008. He wasn't popular then and he is less popular now.

Vic is dishonest??? Surely to God there CAN'T be any more dishonest MP's in Harper's government!!!! Pretty soon there won't be an honest Conservative left anywhere!!!!! What's that??? You say there AREN'T any now?? Well!! Burn my clothes!! One constant of this Harper government is dishonesty, lies, obfuscation, and 'personal' attacks......Simms' revelation is no bloody surprise...and truth be known 'we' are last on his list for anything.....and sucking up as Stunderdale has recently, just underpins the lengths they will go to, to get funding......nothing has changed since Danny the Immaculate jumped ship!!

In the late 80s the Mulroney government approved plans to build a new federal penitentiary in Newfoundland. This was while Crosby was Justice Minister and Kelleher was Solicitor General (as Public Safety was called back in the day). But this plan, with many others in every area of spending, was cancelled during the mid 90s when slaying the deficit was the top priority.

Undoubtedly the most untruthful and undemocratic government Canada has ever had. Toews would have us believe that he actually puts stock in the opinions of opposition members regarding federal spending priorities. His government is pandering to an aging voter preoccupation with crime (despite its steady decline in recent years) in the knowledge that provinces, not the feds, will bear most of the extra costs involved. I watched the two local tv networks give this guy an opportunity to grand stand in full partisan mode without so much as a word to challenge him on the truth of his claims. In the run up to a probable spring election, Harper has been monitoring the mood of Newfoundlanders to ascertain just how many seats he can recoup and how many trinkets and baubles it will cost to erase their memory of the abuse they have suffered at the hands of his government. For her part, Dunderdale is on the horns of a dilemna. She is looking for evidence that Harper can get past his personal disdain for Newfoundland and commit badly needed funding to any of the long neglected areas identified by the province. But the ever shrewed Harper may already have decided that with or without Dunderdale in his corner (and assuming no repeat of ABC), he can win three - possibly even four seats in the province without having to ante up anything more than vauge assurances. He may be a tyrant but polls show clearly that Canadians prefer the brand they know - however distasteful - to the plain no-name brand they don't. The attack ads have done their damage. They have successfully framed Iggy as an awkward alien intruder. And yet there is still this worry in the back of their minds of what is to come if Harper even gets a majority. They are right to worry.

So Mr. Simms suggests if he writes a letter 5 years ago that continues to be his position. We all know the Liberals and particularly their leader change positions on issues like he changes his underwear. So Toews is right. Nothing recent and particularly when the Libs are whining about more prisons. It smacks of being disingenuous Simms. Speak up or else you have no case. Either you want a new prison or additional prison spaces in Nfld. or you don't. You can't suck and blow at the same time.

So sad to see there are still Jarge and Maggies out there - the old newfie joke characters. we dont need Ottawas scraps - or those who threaten to us. Manning, Sullivan et al should be ashamed to associate themselves with this crowd. but noooo- now that Danny Williams is gone, they seem to have crawled out of their rat holes again.... please fellas - go home..for the good of Newfoundland. please

Mr simms has the kind of soundbone that we need in our politicians.... I hope he stays upalong to work for all us who live in this far east hinterland because if the harperites get a majority upthere, we are in for one magabullshit storm down here.
