Paul Porter of Kelligrews endured several hours of great consternation on Saturday, March 26 at the S. W. Moores Memorial Stadium in Harbour Grace.
Porter had earlier purchased five tickets to Game 1 of the Herder Memorial Trophy championship series, to be played later that evening at Mile One Centre in St. John's between the Conception Bay North CeeBee Stars of Harbour Grace and the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts.
Porter is a staunch supporter of the CeeBees, and paid $300 for the tickets (retail value of $75) on ebay.ca.
He tucked them into his rear pants pockets and made the trip to Harbour Grace with his young son, who was taking part in a minor hockey jamboree.
But the tickets, neatly inserted into a white envelope, went missing. For several hours, Porter searched high and low throughout the rink, inside and out.
Finally, just as he was about to give up, he decided to look inside a garbage barrell. Sure enough, the white envelope was there, resting atop the trash.
The tickets were still inside. Someone seemingly picked up the envelope and, thinking it was litter, discarded it in the barrell.
Porter could hardly contain his sense of relief, and repeatedly laughed nervously as he retold the story.
When asked about the price he paid for the tickets, Porter joked that his wife likely would not be happy with the expenditure.
As it turned out, the CeeBees lost both weekend games in St. John's, and head to Grand Falls-Windsor this weekend to resume the highly anticipated series.
