The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) announced today the 2011 Snow Crab fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador, for most crab fishing areas, will open 6 a.m. Monday.

Licence conditions will be available at DFO licencing centres and fishermen are reminded that no fishing gear may be set until after the opening time.

This crab fishing season is expected to be the best the province has seen for awhile, with the price for crab set at its highest level in years — an 80-cent increase this season over last season to $2.15 per pound.

Full details on the management measures and quota levels for 2011 can be found at: http://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/decisions/fm-2011-gp/atl-013-eng.htm
