Winter on shortlist for literature’s Orange Prize

London — A Booker Prize finalist and a former writer for “Sesame Street” are among six contenders for Britain’s Orange Prize for fiction by women.

Organizers announced today a shortlist that includes Irish-Canadian novelist Emma Donoghue’s Booker-shortlisted “Room” and “Annabel” by Kathleen Winter, a Canadian writer whose work includes scripts for children’s TV.

The other finalists are “Great House” by U.S. writer Nicole Krauss; “The Memory of Love,” by Scottish-Sierra Leonean writer Aminatta Forna; “Grace Williams Says it Aloud” by Britain’s Emma Henderson; and “The Tiger’s Wife,” by Belgrade-raised writer Tea Obreht.

The 30,000-pound (US$45,000) prize is open to any novel by a woman published in English. The winner will be announced June 8.
