MONCTON, N.B. — A 60-year-old Newfoundland man charged in the prison killing of a notorious cult leader in New Brunswick will return to court June 16.

Matthew MacDonald, of Port au Port, N.L., is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Roch “Moses” Theriault.

MacDonald made a brief appearance in a Moncton court today, where he requested more time to seek legal aid.

He is currently serving time for two deaths in British Columbia — including that of a fellow inmate.

Investigators say Theriault was found dead near his cell at a penitentiary in Dorchester, N.B., on Feb. 26.

Police say the 63-year-old was involved in an altercation with another inmate and died from his injuries.
