BREAKING: AHL deal done for St. John's

The Telegram has learned Danny Williams has a tentative agreement in place with True North Sports and Entertainment that will see the new Winnipeg NHL team house its American Hockey League team at Mile One Centre in St. John’s for the 2011-2012 AHL season.

The paper has also learned St. John’s Sports and Entertainment is currently meeting to approve an agreement in principle for a lease arrangement with Williams and Mile One Centre.

A news conference may be called this evening.

St. John’s was last home to an AHL team in 2004-05, the last season for the St. John’s Maple Leafs.

More details as they become available.

    still lots of support for Danny. it just goes to show that people appreciate what he did for Newfoundland. maybe, just maybe if Danny was leader of the provincial liberals what would be the result of the upcoming election?? i wonder.. congrats Danny and thanks. good luck in your future.

    I want to congradulate Danny Williams,first for being a diehard Newfoundlander,& what has done during his tenure as premier,now as the influence,in getting an ahl team for Newfoundland.For those like Graham.if you are such a classic,knowing person,please use your whole name.Go Danny go!

    I love how some people are getting sooky due to danny bringing a pro hockey team back to NL......most people are saying they are glad the gov of nl isn`t going to chip in on the team but yet they can give money to republic of Doyle ?. This team will bring money in....one way is that mile one will finally be used regularly and bring money in to help pay for that...it will give people jobs working in the concession booths ....after hockey games people will go down to geroge street and spend money there .It will bring in lots of hockey fans from outside st john`s which will bring in more money to the city...It`s great to finally have hockey back in this city!

    The city can work out a lease agreement all they want. but they better not be giving my tax money towards a hockey team. They had to put up our water tax and we have to pay for a bowel plant and a water treatment plant because they didn't have the money. They were in a deficit. Maybe that money they were going to give themselves in a raise, they're now giving to the hockey team. I hope they all gets voted out this coming fall. They're the worst council we ever had and I have seen a few doodises.

    Congrats Danny! I will support the team as much as possible. I think that since the goverment didn't want to invest in a money maker, maybe they will not need the tax $$$$ it will generate.

    YES !!!!!! Put me down for 2 season tickets again... Great work Danny !!!! Seeing the Prov Gov does not want anything to do with this, maybe they will not want the sales tax for them. Why collect 1000's of dollars when they have no interst for hockey... HA HA !!!! some chance there !!!

    This is great news, also good to see Danny Williams sporting his old Gonzagas Jersey. The emblem of which borrowed from the Minnesota Vikings. The original home town for our new Hockey team originally the Minnesota Moose.

    Old Danny makes everone else look bad again so he can come out like the hero he thinks he is. Great job Premier Dunderdale. Danny has his Hockey Team we still have our tax dollars to be used on bigger and better things. Will this vengefull old man ever go away or does the world still need to revolve around him? I allready know the answer to that anyway.

      Seems like your very sour and bitter towards Danny, where does this come from? Is it from the success that he brought to the province? The job that Danny done for 10 years with NO pay for our province? Maybe's Danny's personal wealth is an issue for you? Overall, seems like he has done nothing but good for the province, yet you still complain about the things he has done/is doing, why is this?

      Excellent Graham, we get our hockey team so the tax dollars can go to bigger and better things...You must be in the Arts Community and feared losing your grant. I just hope come October Danny has control over this and does not allow Dunderdale and French to participate in opening the season at centre ice.
