Hundreds of people cheered at Mile One Centre this morning as Danny Williams officially announced an American Hockey League franchise for St. John’s.

Williams was joined by Craig Heisinger, the senior vice-president and director of hockey operations/assistant GM for the new Winnipeg NHL club, Glenn Stanford and St. John’s Sports and Entertainment chairman Gerry Smith.

Williams is leasing the former Manitoba Moose from True North Sports and Entertainment. True North last week officially purchased the Atlanta Thrashers NHL team and will be relocating it to Winnipeg for the start of the 2011-12 NHL season.

The Moose have been part of the AHL since 2001-02, playing out of the old Winnipeg Arena and the MTS Centre, which will be home to the new NHL club.

With the re-emergence of the NHL in Winnipeg, True North is transferring its AHL club to Newfoundland.

More details to come.

We think our new Hockey Team; The Newfoundland Screechers. Newfoundland is known world wide for its screech rum. All tourists come to NL to be screeched in. The screech name could be used as an advertising and marketing tool and the NL name should be used to represent a Provincial team bringing all Newfoundlanders together.

Way to go Danny Williams!! Someone, once again, who isn't afraid to step up to the plate! All of the Danny bashers , the usual whiners who couldn't hold a job let alone do something positive for the province come out of their root cellars to take a swipe at him. Just good to see you have a positive impact on the province. Keep it up despite the lowlife bashers!

Great job! I just hope that Mr. Williams will chose a name that is fitting to all of Newfoundland and Labrador and not just St. John's. It would encourage more people to travel to the city to support their team. A Win Win situation for the AHL team, local business and hockey fans.

Maybe this will be Dannys legacy. Anything he did as Premier sure as hell wont be. Who will old Danny bash now. We all know he has to be in a squabble with someone. Stay tuned tax payers the best is yet to come.
