Air Canada talks continue as clock ticks down to midnight strike deadline

MONTREAL — Some workers at Air Canada (TSX:AC.B) threaten to go on strike at midnight if a deal with the airline isn’t reached by the end of the day.

Both the company and its customer service and sales staff say they are committed to reaching a deal to avoid a strike, but so far there’s been no sign of an agreement.

The workers served a 72-hour strike notice on Friday and are allowed to go on strike at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday.

Air Canada has downplayed the potential impact of a strike and says it will continue to operate a full schedule.

Jamie Ross, who heads the Canadian Auto Workers local representing the workers, says the big sticking point is changes the airline has proposed to workers’ pensions.

Air Canada was forced into creditor protection from April 2003 to September 2004 partly because of its pension deficit.
