MONCTON, N.B. — The trial of a 62-year-old man accused of kidnapping a Moncton woman last year gets underway today with the selection of a jury.

Romeo Jacques Cormier was arrested in March 2010 after a 54-year-old woman escaped from a basement apartment in Moncton and flagged down a passing truck.

The woman, who can’t be identified because of a publication ban, was the focus of a large-scale search for almost a month.

Officials are using the Moncton Coliseum to begin the jury selection process after notices went out recently to 1,500 people.

The case made national headlines and Cormier’s lawyers considered asking for a change of venue because of the publicity over the case.
