Russell Crowe and his wife will be performing in St. John's after all.

The "Gladiator" and "A Beautiful Mind" actor started rumours earlier this month when he began writing cryptic messages about the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, scheduled to happen in Bannerman Park in August, on Twitter.

"NF Folk Festival, think about it," he wrote, numerous times.

Folk festival organizers told The Telegram they had not had any contact with Crowe and weren't aware of what he was talking about. Crowe didn't respond to a request for comment from The Telegram at that time.

Friday night, Crowe tweeted that he and Great Big Sea frontman Alan Doyle will be "singing tunes and telling stories from the Crowe/Doyle songbook" with special guests at the LSPU Hall Aug. 3 and 4. The special guests, he wrote, will include his wife, Australian singer/songwriter Danielle Spencer, as well as American actor/musician Scott Grimes and Irish pop/folk duo size2shoes. Size2shoes were performers at last year's folk festival.

Tickets for the two shows will go on sale July 8, Crowe, who is also rumoured to be in talks to guest star on "Republic of Doyle" while he's in town, wrote.

When contacted by The Telegram, Doyle - in Ottawa with the rest of Great Big Sea this weekend, to perform at Canada Day celebrations - confirmed the news.

"Looking forward to two fun nights at the LSPU Hall with friends from Australia, Canada, the United States and overseas," he said. "Tickets will go quick."

More information about the shows is expected to be announced in a media release this week.

I'm a Sydneysider. People forget that Russell Crowe was a busker and singer before he was an actor. Danielly Spencer is enchanting and a beautiful lyricist. Saw her in an intimate pub theatre in Sydney. I was blown away and have since bought all her music. Wish I was there!
