The Public Utilities Board announced Tuesday that it has hired Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) to help review the Muskrat Falls hydro project.

The government has ordered the PUB to review Muskrat against an isolated-island option, to determine which will be the lower cost for electricity consumers.

In a news release, the PUB said that it has been getting documents from Nalcor since mid-June and MHI will be reviewing all of that data and analysis.

All documents will be posted at www.pub.nl.ca, and MHI will author a report based on the documents.

The PUB is also planning on posting public hearings starting in October; specific dates have not been determined yet.

The whole process needs to be finished by Dec. 30, when the PUB will submit a final report to government, outlining which electricity option is the cheapest for consumers.

MHI is a subsidiary of Manitoba Hydro, the province’s Crown energy utility.

Nalcor's getting Manitoba to review Muskrat Falls becomes a circular argument. After all Manatoba Hydro (MH) has to work with information from Nalcor. So around and around we go. Of course Muskrat Falls is a good Project. The area is a natural for a massive Project, but for what purpose, and at what price. We can be certain Nalcor gave MH the same information it presented to the JRP and the PUB. The JRP found it lacking, the PUB is asking for more information. So around and around it goes, and still comes out a question mark. End of the day it is still an expensive venture with nowhere to go to get the money back except from the rate and tax payers. Nalcor is gauranteed its 12% win and can't lose. No, Ms. Dunderdale this is not a good Project. The MH report is just another confusing wrinkle in the already wrinkly mess of misinformation. Nalcor can't compete with Quebec Hydro and hope to win. Yes it could possibly be a good deal for N.S. if they write the contract for them, then Newfoundland will be giving away the Muskrat much as they gave away the Upper Churchill, except wirth no possibility of ever getting any money back.

This is much like closing the barn door after the horse is gone. This should have been done well before our retiring supreme leader Danny rushed to complete his bucket list so he could retire from politics. Muskrat Falls was an expensive ego trip that we are all going to pay dearly for for many years to come. It pales in comparison to the Upper Churchill deal, at least we actually make money on that one not that much, but we actually do get some money!

What is the point of the exercise, to spend a few more tax dollars; Manitoba Hydro can only play the cards they are dealt, not access to the entire deck, what a farce? Come On Skinner you can do better than that, only creating more negativity

Getting a second opinion regarding Muskrat Falls development is the best political decision that the government could ever do. I have this funny feeling that there’s something wrong with this Hydro-Project.

Another waste of time and money caused by Liberals, and no-nothings. Get on with the project.

The December 30 deadline is 2 months after the 2011 general election has concluded. Nothing more than posturing by the government on a very important issue.
