The St. John’s IceCaps will become official Friday with the naming of the American Hockey League team at Mile One Centre.

The name, first reported by The Telegram last month, was selected by club president Danny Williams.

St. John’s will be the farm club of the newest NHL club, the Winnipeg Jets.

There has been widespread circulation and unfounded rumours regarding the team’s name, stirring great debate amongst hockey fans.

Friday’s announcement is slated for 11 a.m., and will also see the unveiling of the team’s logo. As part of the official launch, IceCaps T-shirts and ball caps will go on sale noon Friday at That Pro Look, Maverick Sports and Collectibles, Play-it-Again Sports and Sportscraft.

The IceCaps’ jersey won’t be unveiled until the team’s home opener Oct. 14 at Mile One.

    Unfortunately, despite the trial balloon, a majority of the St. John's fans haven't agreed to another moniker name in the month that has passed. Winnipeg fans agreed to Jets 3-1 in the polls, St. Johns fans couldn't even agree to a name with 1/4 of a poll... Therefore, Danny gets to decide... The St. John's fans blew their chance...

    Looks like most of us are accepting ICECAPS as not that bad anyway. So lets predict the LOGO......? It gotta be an ICEBERG......with a Pothead going by. GO CAPS GO

    Who cares what they are called. We will support them. For those that won't because of the name, get over your childishness, stay away from the confines of Mile One and stuff your negativity in a sack. Hockey is back in St. John's, I would'nt care if they were called the Bucky King's Whoppers, I'd be in a seat at Mile One to watch them.

    Who really cares. Have any of you looked at the names of the other teams in this league? The Whale? The Ice Hogs? The Checkers? Ice Caps is at least as good as those, and the closest we could come to using the old Caps name and possibly incorporate the logo without actually naming the team the "caps" and having an AHL affiliate share a name with a divisional rival of its parent club.

    Just thought the new name might get AHL fans confused with the Ice Cap's new name. Up until 2005 we had the Worcester Ice Cats playing here in Massachusetts. Team was here for 11 years in the AHL . Good luck and look forward to seeing you play here in Worcester against my new team the Worcester Sharks. i am also a season ticket holder here .

    tsk, tsk ... a few monhts back when it was rumoured that "Ice Caps" was being considered as the name for our new AHL franchise, there was a lot of negative reaction to it ... Danny is a smart man and I am surprized that he didn't come up with a stronger sounding name, one better reflective of our proud history and heritage ... but, Danny likely came up with the lame "Ice Caps" moniker and his famous stubborness and pride would've likely prevented him from considering an alternative ... shame really ... now our team is just another Newfie Joke ... tsk, tsk ...

    I love how Winnipegers got what they wanted with their team name, and St John's gets a horrible abortion of a name compromise nobody likes. It's like the complete opposite.

    What about the "St. John's Snipers"? The Cdn. forces has a reputation of some of the best snipers in world. Winnipegs logo was decidedly military. Hopefully it could translate into lots of pucks in the net.

    I have no problem with "IceCaps" but to be honest they should just be called "The Caps" like the good old days of senior hockey. The first game they should retire Gus Grecco, Hilton Ruggles and Brad Fishers Jerseys.....

    With the money DW paid for his team I guess he earns the right to call it anything he wants. Lets go Caps! Real fans of hockey won't even give it another thought. Bet the ones complaining didn't get to the ticket booth in time......snooze you lose!

    I'll go regardless of the name, though I think something like "Mariners" would reflect the culture a bit better. Also St. John's Jets has a nice alliterative ring to it and identifies us with the big league team a bit better.

    I have a good feeling that I was the guy who let the cat out of the bag, got up one morning to buy stjohnsicecaps.com or .ca and see if I could resell them to make a few bucks and sure enough when I did a WHOIS lookup, it was bough on the 16th of June. Posted it on my fb wall and emailed the info to VOCM Backtalk. 24 hours later, the news starts talking about it. I wonder if the group came up with this name had a natural liking to it and put it out there as a means of free test marketing? Anyway, in time people will get over it. We did get over the look of the Rooms right? :)

    White caps > Ice Caps But it doesn't matter, the rest of Canada already know's were the stupidest province in Canada, now our Hockey team will prove it for us by bearing the name of an iced beverage. This province goes nowhere near the earth's Ice Cap. Not Even Labrador.

    Oh people, get over it! Its a name, and just like the NF flag, the flak over this will soon be forgotten. Those using the "Tim" arguement, perhaps you spend a little too much time there. Over time, we'll come to know them as the "Caps!" How many of us would have chosen a different name for ourselves! I was always partial to Alfonzo, but Bob has suited me fine! Go Icecaps Go!!!

    Hockey is hockey and I will grudgingly go to some games, but I refuse to buy any merchandise as long as the team has this stupid name. I'm very disappointed with Williams right now, he knows perfectly well that the vast majority of us hate the name "IceCaps".

      I'd just like to point out to everyone that "hates" this name, ice caps are chunks of ice that float in the ocean. Now, lets go back to every year where we all debate about how much we love the seal hunt, ice caps are everywhere with that. Big connection with our province and the history of the island. Not to mention most ships used to cast off from St. John's to the ice fields where the, you guessed it, ice caps were located. It's a fine name and shows cultural importance. Anyone that links it to Tim Horton's also doesn't see the potential sponsorship deal that will keep the team here longer than the former leafs. Anyone who hates the name is not a true hockey fan. It's about the team, not the name.

    I'm not opposed to the name because of its relation to the Tim Horton's "Iced Capp" because I think that's foolish. The "Iced Capp" is based on... you, know... the real ice cap (a glacier). Anyway, I am opposed because it sounds cartoonish and weak. Either way, I'll be supporting the team. Ice Caps on the program, CAPS in the hearts. Go Caps Go! PS. GROWLERS is a terrible, terrible name. I'd rather Ice Caps.

    newfoundland and labrador a cultural mecca. st johns the cultural heart of a province brimming with uniqueness. the best we can come up with is a recycled name. prehaps we are not the cultural mecca that we pretend to be.

    Ice Caps will be shortened to Caps. When Fog Devils was annouced I wasn't impressed with that but after a while it grew on me I'm sure Ice Caps will too. It's a lot better than most of the others names that have been suggested.

    All you Ice Cap haters should actually look up the proper name and spelling of the Tim Horton's beverage. It's "Iced Capp". http://www.timhortons.com/ca/en/menu/specialtycoldbeverages.html This hockey team will be named (so we've been repeatedly told) Ice Caps. A subtle difference, but still a difference. GO CAPS GO!!! (PS - Growlers sucks).

      Hey CAPSMAN, so i am sitting here eating a 96 pak of timbits and sipping on an Iced Cap and it occurred to me.......Eurika these idiots can't get it through their heads that there will always be a DIRECT correlation with Tim Horton's. IT's STUPID! Frank Lee summed it up best, read his comment! Truth is I would say that Danny Jr. Loves drinking an Iced Capp before he sheds his T-shirt and engages in a Brawl so it was fitting to name the team after JR's pre-fight Meal! What A Bloody Joke!

    Ice Caps?????? There are no Ice Caps in or around Newfoundland!!! Expect at Tim Horton's, maybe that is where the idea came from. Hope Tim's sues... Did anyone see the MacLean's article, people across Canada must be laughing at us again, way to go Danny!

    Hate the name. and I have to agree, what joy does a person get in announcing something before it's offical, rumour is one thing, stating it is another. Thanks Danny for getting us a team but no thanks for the name, no time to hold a contest or not you still could have listened to the people and not some quick poll of people close to ya. Gotta go out now and try to find an Ice Cap somewhere, wait....the only one I'll find anywhere near Newfoundland is at Tim's!!! not planning on going to the Arctic.

      He has no obligation to consult the "people" when coming up with a name. It's Mr. Shorts job to get the appropriate information, what's is Mr. Short going to do, get the correct information and then sit on it because A) he doesn't want to ruin the surprise for the public or B) get scooped by another media outlet because they're going to do the same thing if they get the information first?

    Boooo don't like the name at all, let's at least hope for a nice logo. And before people jump on this post, I am a huge hockey fan and will go to games but that doesn't mean I have to like the name of the team, they could have picked much much better, as you could clearly see by all the posts over the weeks on different sites. Bummer

    Major Disappointment.....for 2 reasons, one that the name seems to be Ice Caps and that the reporter leaks the name and has for a while now. Great piece of media work, why have a lanch tomorrow when this writer already announced it!!! Put the logo in your article and save Danny some time tomorrow. Go Growlers Go!!!!

    Brutal!! nothing else sums it up better than that...... Free advertising for tims! Logo should be good, a big Clear Plastic Tims Iced Cappucino cup with the red and white swirl straw?! Please say Tim Hortons will NOT be granted the contract for coffee and grogs like at the old Memorial Stadium, what a joke. Anyway, St.John's Jets was ours to piss away and Voila! Well Done Group, Well Done!
