The son of former Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin will be sentenced Aug. 31 for impaired driving causing death.

The date was set as Jack Tobin’s sentencing hearing wrapped up this morning.

Tobin pleaded guilty in May after his close friend died in an Ottawa parking garage on Christmas Eve.

Alex Zolpis was pinned under a pickup truck during parking-lot shenanigans.

Prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence and a 10-year driving ban while the defence has suggested a sentence of between 18 and 30 months.

All very sad. Why does the Justice system move so slowly when an individual admits guilt? This tragedy has been in the court process since January. Jack Tobin has admitted responsibility so why is the Court taking 8 months to bring closure to all parties involved? Our justice system is terribly flawed procedurally.
