The provincial government today released two action plans — Charting our Course: Climate Change Action Plan 2011 and Moving Forward: Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2011.

According to a news release, climate change presents both opportunities and risks for Newfoundland and Labrador. The action plan embraces all sectors and focuses on greenhouse gas reductions, as well as adaptation measures for the impacts of climate change such as sea-level rise and increased storm activity.

The release also notes that opportunities exist to improve energy efficiency in a cost-effective way in the province. In the energy efficiency plan, government says it recognizes the importance of leading by example and providing a strong and sustained focus that reaches out to all sectors of the economy.

Environment Minster Ross Wiseman said at a news conference this morning that government believes the province can be a leader in these areas.

“We are committed to ensuring that the province is a model of economic and environmental sustainability,” Wiseman said.

“While we have made progress, we realize we have more to accomplish, and Charting Our Course sets out our goals and objectives as we move forward.”

Natural Resources Minister Shawn Skinner said energy efficiency offers an opportunity to support economic development and environmental progress in the province.

“Energy efficiency can lower household fuel bills, strengthen business competitiveness, enhance energy security, reduce air pollutants harmful to human health, and contribute to efforts to tackle climate change,” he saids. “The energy efficiency plan injects new momentum into our province’s effort to generate interest in energy efficiency initiatives.”

Enough pandering to special interests for votes. If these ministers would educate themselves, they would find that: - climate has been changing for 4.5 billion years and humans can't do a thing about it - Sea-level rise is also natural. Satellite measurements show global sea level rose merely 0.83 inches during the first decade of the 21st century (a pace of just 8 inches for the entire century), and has barely risen at all since 2006 - Global Hurricane Activity At Historical Record Lows, furthermore, when each storm's intensity and duration were taken into account, the total global tropical cyclone accumulated energy (ACE) was found to have fallen by half to the lowest level since 1977 This government insists on creating more and more positions in a bureaucracy that is already too large, creating bogus 'green' money-making opportunities for rent seekers and buying into green initiatives that are not only uneconomic, they're job killers and simply don't work. Stop wasting our money! JQP

Another good step would be to stop allowing multibillion dollar foreign mining companies such as Vale to dump poison into our fresh water and the ocean. This government can't talk about environmental progress when they have taken us back in time and allow waste disposal practices of the 1970's. I'll take a little smog over dead ponds any day.

Talk is cheap. Government talks a good talk yet does nothing to encourage energy conservation. Im not surprised, they are basing the Muskrat Falls project on predicted increases in demand and encouraging efficiency would throw a wrench in their already shaky predictions.

"We are going to....." I long for the day when someone in government will say, "We are doing it." Which could lead someday to the miraculous quote, "We have done it." How hard it is to be considered stupid by idiots.
