MONTREAL — One person is missing after a landslide washed away a Quebec road that had been pummelled by the powerful remnants of hurricane Irene.

A provincial police spokesman says a motorist disappeared when a section of roadway was swept into the Yamaska River, northeast of Montreal.

Benoit Richard says two cars — carrying a total of three people — ended up in the river.

He says two people managed to scramble out of the vehicles to safety — but one of the drivers did not.

Richard says police have asked the Canadian Coast Guard for help in the search.

The post-tropical storm packed a windy, rainy punch as it barrelled through southern Quebec and the Maritimes.

Forecasters expect the heavy winds to persist until midday — with warnings in effect for the Maritime provinces and southern Quebec.

Some 165,000 power customers in Quebec are still without power today, while tens of thousands more in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia also woke up to no electricity.

In the United States, more than 20 people were killed when Irene churned along the Eastern Seaboard. Millions were left without power and thousands of flights were cancelled.
