National Defence Minister Peter McKay was in Happy Valley-Goose Bay today to announce three new remediation projects for the 5-Wing military base.

The investment for the three projects is $62 million over the next seven years.

“We are here and we are resolute in our commitment for the restoration of 5-Wing Goose Bay to meet the high standards of environmental stewardship, and ensure the safety of our men and women in uniform,” McKay said.

McKay estimated the new cleanup projects at Dome Mountain, Survival Tank farm, and the former hydrant areas will create 325 jobs.

Labradorians are not guaranteed first priority at these jobs but McKay said every effort would be made to see that Labradorians benefit.

“We always try to hire local.”

The remediation project began last year with contractor SNC Lavalin receiving two contracts for a total of $2.7 million for cleanup.

The remediation is part of a $300 million, 10-year project to clean up waste caused by the past storage of contaminants at 5-Wing Goose Bay.

So the feds have announced that DND is going to clean up it's mess. Big deal. When are they going to deliver on their promise of years ago and give the base an operational role with a significant long-term troop presence?

There is no current requirement for long term trtoop prescence. It would be an isolation posting with personnel rotating in and out every three years. Unaffordable

MWO Bode: I respect your opinion as a former CF member (I am one as well). However, the federal government did promise a troop presence and operational role for CFB Goose Bay, so they should either deliver on that promise or explain their failure to do so. We could discuss the pros and cons of such a presence in Goose Bay until the cows come home, but what I'm talking about here is the issue of political honesty and accountability.
