The worldwide “occupy“ movement came to Newfoundland and Labrador on Saturday.

About 50 people braved a soggy day on the St. John’s waterfront to show solidarity with their American counterparts. The demonstrators have been inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protest that’s been taking place in the United States for the past couple of weeks. Dubbed Occupy Newfoundland the Harbourside Park event coincided with similar protests across the world on Saturday.

In keeping with the occupy theme several people pitched tents in the park and vowed to stay as long as possible.

Organized mostly online through social media websites the events espouse any number of grievances with the status quo, but all share the theme of displeasure with the financial uncertainty facing the average citizen and disparity in the distribution of the world’s wealth.

Dear Ed, Sarcasm is unbecoming. Dear Jim, No one is resentful of anyone coming up with a good idea, building a business, or treating employees with respect. That's not the point. The issue is, that 1 per cent of the world's population, controls 99 per cent of the money. Within that context, there are many issues that need to be resolved, including how we run our business, how we affect the planet we live on, what we leave our children, who is actually governing us... the list goes on. It is about how things have run amock, less and less for the greater good, more for a few select individuals. Unless you are a Rockefeller, a Bush, or the Queen of Netherlands, you are part of the 99 per cent. And I encourage you engage nearly any of the, mostly young people, occupying Harbourside Park. Most of them are well educated. That's part of the problem.... they think, they feel, they act. They even care about you. Frankly, I'm inspired and hopeful.

I see no reason why union reps should be at such gatherings. Does this affect the average guy that comes up with an idea and makes a fortune. This is a country of free enterprise, if I make money keep my employes happy then what is the gripe. I get the feeling they want the employer to toss bags of money to people that have no right to deserve it. The ones that complain are partially uneducated and don't want to apply themselves.

After trying to read your contribution, Jim, I can honestly say that I'm convinced that you're not partially uneducated.

The problem, Jim, is that far too few have too much resources and government control leading to job destruction for the recently graduated and whomever debuting into society; basically, the skilled and educated are actually finding it hard to find a job and to get a kick start on life. It's impossible to turn a blind eye to what is happening if you have read previous Telegram entries and other news sources. You must have noticed in the recent provincial election that the conservatives had the biggest campaign. Think about it; who has the money for all this? Don't you think these businesses are reimbursing the campaign in order to propagate their own agenda? Muskrat falls? Did people from Newfoundland vote for the leaders who would best represent their needs or the party with the biggest and most attractive campaign? The whole point of the rally is to make citizens aware so they can make better voting choices in the future.

Sooo, Lane, You're accusing MR's questioning of the acquisition of vast amounts of capital by a few people as "selfish?" I suppose that means that you would also reject Ayn Rand's endorsement of greed as the foundation of freedom? And if you're suggesting that capitalism hasn't led to poverty, privations, and oppression, look around the world.

If you did pay attention to the media, Watcher, you would know that this is about much more than the failure of the Wall Street. If Harper been able to, he would have deregulated Bay Street a long time ago. The only thing that saved us was a minority government. Much of what people are protesting is the increasingly massive amounts of wealth and political power to fewer and fewer people. And, yeah, it's happening around the world and here too.

This funny. Perhaps outport Newfoundlanders should take to the streets over their St. John's overlords having alll the oil jobs, and public services, and standard of living, and expensive houses, and futures. If you gave your heads a shake, you'd realize that YOU are Newfoundland's 'Wall St.' and Dunderdale is our new head investment banker....

Again I ask "What is the 'Wow-Factor' in this event?? It would be worthwhile to remind ya'lls that the New-Global-Economy is fully entrenched and moving forward unchallenged. Political Leaders cannot do a darn thing about-it...it is either 'Keep-in-Step' or 'Die'. Winners and Losers will continue to Pop-Up. There is a 'Choice'. Each individual on this planet must decide their own 'Choice'. Being a Winner is the Better-Choice. Study the SYSTEM continuously. Adjust and Adapt., There is only ONE metric in this 'Game'...MONEY. It is ALL about MONEY... MEGA-MONEY, Folks!!! And remember you cannot take" ANY MONEY" with you to the next life.

Ridiculous... this is what happens when too many people want to be a part of something but don't bother to do the research first. Nothing but media sheep. The US and Canada have two completely different banking and political systems. Anyone who thinks we have the same problems as the US really needs to stop watching Fox News and start watching the CBC. After the economic collapse (which originated in the US, surprise surprise) Canada weathered the storm and now leads the world in economic recovery while the US still flounders. What happened in the US could never happen here BECAUSE of our banking and political systems, and people are protesting that??? Unbelievable.

DOWN WITH CORPORATE GREED (Posted from my iPhone) End FIAT currency and Fractional Reserve banking. The rest will come naturally as the current system requires infinite growth which cannot exist in a world doomed with finite energy and finite resources. The end is near whether you like it or not, something's gotta give. These protests are the foreshadowing of the massive riots to come when our world infrastructure breaks down. Eventually, there will be no oil and there will be no way to transport, grow, or produce food and crucial supplies at our current rates of production, thus driving up prices and limiting the population to a lowered carrying capacity. Michael Ruppert predicted this stuff YEARS ago. (and countless others)

Come on, give me and all the other normal people out there a break. I drove by there and saw the group of protesters. Like we saw on TV, most, if not all these protesters are the regulars and would be out to protest if a dog, in their opinion, had a crap the wrong way. These are the same ones you will see out supporting Greenpeace trying to kill our seal hunt and the livelyhoods of all the families affected by it. They have way too much time on their hands and all they want to do is sit around waiting for something to complain about or someone to make a job for them. By the results of the turnout (only 50, but I guess they will blame that on the inclement weather) the "free enterprise system" is alive and well. They should not dispair though as Christmas is only a couple of months away and they will be able to gather again to protest the right we have to give gifts or the lights around the city are too bright and costs too much money. Like the rest of us, go get an education or training in a field where you can get work, carry a debt load and get a job to make enough to pay the bills and get by as best you can. Stop belly aching because the common majority simply do not care about your opinions.
