A 28-year-old man from Thornlea was killed Tuesday in an industrial accident in Edmonton.

At approximately 2:30 p.m., an I-beam fell and struck the male, who was in a man lift at the time of the incident.

According to Barrie Harrison, a spokesman for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety, the man fell 50 feet and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Pat Murphy, committee chair for the local service district of Thornlea, confirmed for The Telegram that the deceased male was from the community, located a short drive south of Bellevue.

The deceased male was working for Spartan Steel on the construction site in northwest Edmonton.

Workers on the site had been placing I-beams on the skeletal structure of what will eventually become a warehouse.

Alberta Occupational Health and Safety has issued a stop-work order for the construction site, and Harrison said it will take several months to complete its investigation into the accident.

The man was wearing fall protection equipment when the accident occurred, added Harrison.
