Lt.-Gov. John Crosbie is drawing fire for a joke told during Friday’s cabinet shuffle which is being described as “inappropriate” and “shocking.”

During his official remarks to the new cabinet, media and invited guests, Crosbie told a series of jokes about the current economic troubles in the United States.

“This fellow said, ‘I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, social security, retirement funds, etc., I called a suicide hotline and got a call centre in Pakistan. When I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck,’” Crosbie quipped.

Wasiq Waqar, president of the Pakistani Students’ Association at Memorial University, said the joke was “shocking to hear” from the province’s lieutenant-governor.

“Maybe it’s a joke, but still, I think it’s insensitive and irresponsible,” Waqar said. “It creates an impression, you know, it embeds prejudice. It creates a stereotype.”

Waqar said part of what made it upsetting was that the joke was made during the course of Crosbie’s speech, during the formal cabinet swearing-in ceremony.

“Even if it’s a joke, if it’s in a private manner with friends and stuff, I would say it’s still tolerable, but if he does this joke in a gathered meeting or a ceremony or publicly, I think it’s not right,” he said.

Premier Kathy Dunderdale was sitting at the front of the room when the joke was told.

In response to an inquiry by The Telegram, the premier’s office issued a statement saying, “The comments of the lieutenant-governor were clearly inappropriate.”

NDP MHA Gerry Rogers also said the joke was out of line.

“We live in a province that is working so hard to open up our province to newcomers, to be aware of, and supportive of a multicultural community,” she said.

“We know that racism still exists in our province, that there is hostility. We’re working on that, and I was so disappointed to think that the representative of our head of state would tell such an inappropriate joke at an official function where the premier and all the new cabinet ministers were sworn in.”

Crosbie has been well known for colourful comments and jokes during his tenure as lieutenant-governor.

He said the joke was one of several sent to him by by a friend in the U.S.

He also joked that the economy is so bad, “Exxon Mobil apparently laid off 25 congressmen,” and that “A truckload of Americans were caught sneaking into Mexico.”

Responding to the criticism, Crosbie wasn’t backing down.

Speaking to The Telegram, he said the joke was about the economic situation in the U.S. and the fact that call-centre jobs are being outsourced around the world. The reference to terrorism wasn’t the point, he said.

“It’s not that they’re associated with terrorists, the joke is that we’re using people like this to phone all over North America, Europe, etc., because it’s cheaper for the (companies) who use them to do that,” he said.

“It’s got nothing to do with that they’re sympathetic with  terrorists, but we know, of course, that in Pakistan there are a large number of terrorists, so that’s the joke.”

Crosbie said if anyone was offended by the joke, they’re welcome to get in touch with him.

“I’m just trying to give the crowd something lighter to be amused about in the course of my opinions,” he said.

“If people don’t like it, they can write me and say, ‘You’re a terrible fellow,’ You’re ignorant,’ ‘You’re a son of a bitch,’ or whatever they want. That’s just the risk you take if you say anything in public, don’t you?”

John Crosbie said a Bad joke during an important government function at government house. Even the Premier said it was "inappropiate." I know everyone makes mistakes, but our Lt. Governor should have known better than to make remarks that may offend certain groups or individuals in society. It isn't the first time John Crosbie has said something offensive or controversial. He is supposed to be the Queen's representative here in Newfoundland & Labrador and he did make a remark that agin was inappropiate. He is supposed to be non-partisan and non-discrimatory to any group. To joke about "depression," and suicide" is shocking. Suicide is not an issue that he or anybody should laugh at or Joke about. I expect better from such an important public figure as Mr. Crosbie. Yes he apologized, but he should have known better. With his apology, perhaps our Lieutenant Governor should receive some "Sensitivity Training."

John Crosby looks like a dinasour and should be burried with them. And it is not the job of the President of the Pakistani Students union to apologize for the stupidity of some of his fellow citizens. That sort of statement is exactly why John boy should be forced to retire.

Should we expect the leadership of the Pakistani Student Society to apologise on behalf of their country that helped Osama bin Laden hide there for years? Just sayin'.

Twisting the reaction of this pathetic debacle into an anecdotal study of the "humourless"....wow. The province-wide, longstanding addiction with partisan politics has transformed even the average guy on the street into an effective, manipulative spin doctor. Our future looks bright.

Bahahahaha, that joke is hilarious. Good one. Mr. Crosbie is a funny guy. The Pakistani students have an association? How racist is that? People should be upset at that. Perhaps if the Pakistani students actually tried integrating into the student body instead of forming their own little cults then they wouldn't be so upset.

Why would we be offended by this joke when this country(Pakistan) and this country's government knowingly houses terrorists? Great joke! Keep it up John. If this country was actually against terrorism then I would think the joke was in bad taste, however we all know this not to be the case. Anyone hear of Osama Bin Laden before? He died where again? The same town as a big Pakistani Military base. Once again, Great joke!

I agree with Mr Crosbie It was a joke but of course politicians are trying to make points out of this. He is right all the terrorists are over there as is where call centers are being placed Time for the people from there to be more concerned about how women and children are treated in those countries If they don't like the jokes too bad. It was not meant to be racist. I am sick of people using race card for their benefit. Ask the soldiers who risk their lives what they think I bet they appreciate Johns joke. It is time for people to lighten up and all I tell people is if they don't like Canada they are free to leave

I agree with people being upset about this, most of the people (anonomously) commenting on this story are saying everyone should lighten up, and "Way to go Crosbie, tell it like it is" but seem to be either misinterpreting the joke itself, or saying that it should be okay for a public figure to make light of something as serious as suicide bombing during a swearing in ceremony, as well as insinuate that anyone on the other end of the line in Pakistan is a terrorist. A lot of people seem to think that the punchline of that joke is that there are a lot of call centres in Pakistan, that's not it, when he says "When I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck" he's referring to suicide bombers driving trucks into crowded public spaces and killing many innocent people. Hilarious. People saying "way to go John" are in a way saying that it's okay for a public figure who is representing the province to make racist jokes about Pakistan, yes he has the right to free speech, but he could have shown an ounce of professionalism and maybe saved that one for open mic night at Yuk Yuks.

Professional drivers should take offense to this "joke." To me it says that to be a taxi or truck driver you have to be at the end of your rope with no job, no money, no hope, and have it so bad that you feel as if you need to call a suicide line. The punch line of the joke is not a bad Pakistani making a suicide bomber comment, it is about a good Pakistani suggesting a driving career. Professional drivers, may not have a dream job, but many love it and their lives. It is time to cut down on the truck and taxi driver jokes.

Well the holy whistlen'. I see absolutely nothing wrong with Mr. Crosbie's comments. Now first of all let me get it out of the way. I am acceptable of diversity and cultures and very open-minded of the wit and everything else that goes with such diversity. But, I have to say we (am I allowed to say Canadian's) are being pushed to the limit as far as what is acceptable and to that end we are losing our own culture for fear of saying something that may be vaguely taken as offensive. I am confident that Mr. Crosbie meant no ill feeling to any one race, creed, or person and that it was just merly a little light-hearted intention. After all, it is fact that just about everything today is being farmed out to call centers and that the vast majority of these service centers are overseas, that's the simple truth of the matter. And, perhaps also the majority of us have all had some level of experience in dealing with explaining something to someone in a call center that is thousands of miles around the world. And, it just might be that kind of frustration or feeling that Mr. Crosbie was referencing in his little anecddote that had, again, no ill intention. Now, let's move on, how many of us today are still exchanging jokes and stories in public or private parties. I mean things such as telling a story that starts something like this,.....".... there were these three guys, an Irishman, Scotsman and a Newf......" and so the story goes until at the punch line it's maybe the Newfie getting the brunt of the joke. Yes, that's right we have long poked fun at ourselves and that's perhaps part of our culture and how we survived both good times and bad. So, people, my advice is to just get off this "politically correct" kick and stop pushing everyone to the brink of insanity and ripping away our culture. Hey, can you imagiine if each of us got on the open line or the meda each time we heard a Newfie joke and got on with just how offended we were. In fact, there is a fellow that has a regular spot on the evening television news that starts out with "how ya' gettin' on?" and it's portraying an experience many of us were blessed to see and experience in our "newfie" culture. Wow, I don't hear anyone getting too offended there. Time to lighten' up. Move on you nay sayers! Right on!

first of all, people shouldn't be shocked by anything John Crosbie says. second, this joke is common among facebook among other places, get over it third, Pakistan is well known to be a supporter in terror, bin laden was living next to their premier military college for years for God's sake, and they support the taliban under the table, don't believe me do some research. fourth, if anyone comes to this province and doesn't like it here go to school at home.

Mr. Crosbie's sense of humor has always been a little off kilter. Remember "Tequila Sheila". Mr. Crosbie needs to remember that he is the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador and as such he is not a private citizen but that he represents the people of this province and is a representative of the Queen. Therefore, everything he states is a statement of the people and the Queen. The joke which I have heard and read many times is not funny but prejudicial and racist. It is belittling not only of Mr. Crosbie but all the people in his presence who had to listen to it or read about it. Not all people of Pakistan are terrorists any more than the people of this province are racists. Ignorance will always show through no matter what position you hold or how much your clothes cost.

The only problem with this incident is that people are trying to make political points on it by disagreeing. It's a fact there are many terrorists in Pakistan. Yes many big multinational companies are placing their call centers in places like India, Pakistan, etc. the trouble with immigration now is that it appears the immigrants don't conform to Canadian ways but expect us to change. If they come to Canada the learn to speak one of the official languages. Conform to the Canadian way or go home. I have no problem with immigration but not at expense of the existing residents. We are not allowed to say Merry Christmas and many other expressions are not politically correct. I wonder just what the immigration situation would be like if our social benefits were not handed out so freely such as Medicare, etc I hear things like Hindu Canadian, Muslim Canadian. The is no such thing. You are either Canadian or not. I say congrats to John. And condemn those who use the race card for their own gain

Move to Ontario or Vancouver for a couple of years, and it will be quite funny.Read Lowell Greens book MAYDAY MAYDAY about immigration and it will be even funnier. When the next Canadian Solider comes home in a body bag,or at least most of him or her comes home, you,ll realize John Crosbies humor is not at all that far from the truth and extremist live amonst us here in Canada and we WILL get attacked. Its getting to the piont in Ontario where the only people whose rights are being trampled on are Canadians. Good Joke John.

Is it funny? Yes. Was the joke appropriate for the venue? No. Does the joke have an element of validity? Yes. It has long been recognized that good humour must have a grain of truth. But it is only by blowing it up into something that is quite obviously false and absurd that we evoke laughter. Now you might ask - what is that grain of truth? The first is that outsourcing jobs to developing countries - especially where the command of english is notoriously poor - has become a huge irritant in the West. The second is that, although Pakistan is not at war with the West (it is still officially at war with India), it is widely accepted that elements of its government have not only harboured but actively encouraged terrorists dedicated to the destruction of the West. By 'running with the hare and hunting with the hound' so to speak Pakistan has managed to extract substantial financial support from the West while at the same time placating extremists at home. Nations at war with one another, or which support others that are, have a long standing habit of poking fun at one another. You have only to hear some of the songs created by soldiers to denigrate their enemies (and in the process relieve their own stress) to understand that where there is armed conflict, dark humour is not far behind. We all understand that a lot of wonderful human beings come from Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, North Korea, etc. However those who've managed to escape the tyranny at home shouldn't be too offended when citizens of the very countries that give them refuge poke fun at the regimes that forced them to flee. Yes, the Lt. Governor could have saved this kind of joke for one of his private dinner parties (I have always thought John Crosbie an unlikely candidate for a job that is not only extraordinarily boring but that requires incumbents to be almost devoid of personality). But is the joke racist. Absolutely not. Even in our extreme eagerness to be politically correct, it is sometimes OK to express your condemnation of diabolical behaviour - even if it is in the form of humour.

Hypocrisy everywhere. 1. Premier Dunderdale found the joke clearly inappropriate. 2, MUN Pakastani student was shocked. 1. Premier, we clearly heard the sound track, but no video of the front row, if you laughed (as a Newfoundlander, I suspect you did), will you and your cabinet also apologize? 2. Mr. Wasig Waqar, what kind of jokes do you hear at MUN, and more so, what do your countrymen laugh about at home. Will you be asking Premier Dunderdale and all other ministers laughing on camera for an apology? Welcome to NL where we learn to laugh at ourselves at a very young age. I think, although inappropriate, it was mildly entertaining. And, although most people would find it offensive, our nature as Newfoundlanders has been a little bit biased, and we do not collectively open our arms to newcomers. In fact, the most racist jokes I have ever heard have been from Newfoundlanders... So stop your whining, and stop pretending that you find it offensive, you laughed just like the rest of us!

Not that I intend to bother with it anyway because it won't help anything--it IS interesting that while Crobsie is inviting people who have a problem with it to contact him (IE: Posturing), he neglects to include a phone number or address or any means of contact for him. He's old, but I don't think he's forgetful just yet...he probably just wants to sound stubborn but is too fragile to handle the backlash directly.

Why is it that time and time and time again, the spokespeople for these groups will cry foul whenever someone cracks a joke about Pakistan or Muslims or whatever. Yet when someone commits a crime in the name of Allah, no one makes a sound? And when someone does say anything, it's like oh they killed those so many people because of American foreign policy or whatever. I bet that would go over just as well! John Crosbie's excesses and bad form were over looked in the days when he was the lone voice speaking out against the little dictator Joey Smallwood and when he was a Federal Cabinet Minister running to become Prime Minister or doling out the patronage and pork barrel make work projects. But those days should be gone from the public domain and so should the honorable Mr. Crosbie! Thanks for the laughs John but it is time to exit stage right.

Politicians have no concern for the least of us
    - November 3, 2011 at 14:33:46

I am sick to death of the politicians very weak concern for the welfare of an economy for the World's people. We are experiencing, at this very moment, the imminent collapse of the World's governments, their economic, corporate and financial structures, all because politicians were only minding the welfare of creating an economy for themselves and the corporations, which have their ears during their tenure in office. It is refereed to as the 'me syndrome'. We, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are acutely aware of how our natural resource base has been developed, not for the benefit of our people, but for the benefit of others, which left our province, the province with the most natural resources in Canada, with the weakest economy for most of our existence as a province of Canada. If we want the World to be a more peaceful and serene place where the World's people are cared for the way they should be, we need less Dictators and more caring politicians running the World. Can't politicians see that if they don't look after the needs of their own subject, then anarchy erupts. I am sure the people of the countries mentioned in the article above would be more peaceful if they had caring politicians instead of Dictators.

Well, it was a joke, after all and I am sure Mr. Crosbie is not one bit shook up about being caught in the crossfire. As for stereotyping, Pakistan has done a good job of that all by themselves. All jokes aside, there is a different mindset between the two countries. As for the Pakistani student assoc at Mun - they are here to get an education, not to take shots at us about what it inappropriate or not.

The difference is A) Crosbie's history of really inappropriate commentary and B) that this is not a comedy hall, it was the official remarks to the new cabinet--something that's SUPPOSED to be a little bit solemn (although the Occupy activists would potentially disagree). It wasn't the appropriate venue for it, even if the joke itself wasn't so bad. The timing and placement of it makes it a bigger deal. There's a very big difference. In a word, it's "Professionalism".

You can champion free speech without celebrating stupid speech. Why is it that every time someone says something offensive people rally behind them waving their free speech banner? It seems that no matter what you say there is a core of people who will defend THAT you said it no matter how racist, inappropriate, or inflamatory the remarks may be. I am not attacking his right to say it, I am just saying it was a pretty stupid thing to say-- free speech or not. In the words of a candidate from the recent election: "it was an idiotic comment by an idioc man"

Most jokes involve people. All people belong to some ethnic or religious group. If every person in a joke is supposed to be a representative of his/her group, and no one can be offended by any joke, then we might as well declare telling jokes a criminal activity. C'mon people. It was a funny joke. Lighten up. I'll be spreading it myself, though not with the wit and delivery of Mr. Crosbie, alas.

I believe in freedom of speech for everyone, even public officials. Crosbie has here demonstrated why: it exposes the ignorant. Crosbie's joke is idiotic, racist, inappropriate and, most objectionably, not funny. I hope he tells it wherever he goes. I hope everyone who hears it retells it. Only then will its nonsensical commentary and intolerant attitude make itself apparent to any thinking individual. Let's hope he next denies the holocaust, the ancient moron.

Am I right? to those who think its 'just a joke'... did you feel the same way when someone told a Newfie joke on an episode of Ellen a few years ago? hey its just a joke. get over it... so next time someone in Canadian media or the entertainment biz disses Newfoundland with some ignorant stereotypes, just remember, its just a joke get over it!...

It was a joke...get over it folks. The local "insert special interest group name here" is too quick to protest what is essentially the truth. Here is a TRUE story that should be a joke. When Air Canada loses or destroys your luggage and you call the tool free number , you get connected to a call centre in India. I was once informed by "service reprentative" to take my damaged luggage to be repairs at a shop the was "very near to me".......(I am less than 50km from St John's) When I asked where this shop was I was informed that it "was indeed very near and in Mississauga".........THAT is the level of service you get.......but we can't protest or make jokes because it might offend somebody. Good joke John.....keep it up !

It's one thing to say that someone on the other side of the world isn't completely up to date on Canadian geography, but it's entirely different when you insinuate that people are terrorists based solely on where they live. By that right we could say that all Newfoundlanders are inbred, unemployed, uneducated alcoholics, as long as it's in a joke it's fine. Grow up.

I have long enjoy some of the colourful comments from Mr. Crosbie but this upsets me. He, as Lt. Gov, represents all of us who live in NL. Regardless of his trite and light, he is the Queen's representative and a reflection of this great province and its people. I am totally appalled that he would even consider this sad commentary as a "joke". As the parents of the good men and women of Canada who died in Afghanistan if they find it humourous. In my opinion, I find this so offensive I believe Mr. Crosbie should immediately resign as LG. His position requires him to respect all people in this province and to portray our people in a good way. This does not.

A newfie's wife passed away and he called 911. The 911 operator told him that they would send someone over right away and asked him where he lived. "At the end of Eucalyptus Drive," the newfie told her. The operator asked, "Could you please spell that for me?" After a long pause, the newfie said, "How 'bout if I drag her over to Oak Street and you pick her up there?" Just a joke right?

Try getting anyone after 5pm for something (Internet fix, cable problems, insurance, warranty work, etc) and you'll find that you will be talking to an outsourced call centre in a foreign country with someone who has yet to master the english language. Seems you can't do anything these days. I guess having a sense of humor will be against the law in the not foreseeable future.

Dear Pakistani student. Not everyone thinks all Pakistanis are terrorists. Those that do came to that conclusion before John Crosbie made this joke. I'm offended that folks like this Pakistani student and folks on the left ( NDP) feel they have to protect me from hearing off color jokes or statements. They seem concerned that I or you may become some raging racist if we hear words or phrases that don't fit the politically correct dogma. How utterly insulting, paternalistic and Orwellian. Listen, I can make up my OWN MIND! I don't need or want a student from Pakistan or Gerry Rogers deciding what I can hear & say. Miss Rogers concern yourself more with the local folks in your riding with limited employment prospects because they have no education or skills. This should be a major concern for all members of all political stripes. Make NL a place where young NLers can stay, raise a family and start a home. Down the road we won't have to worry about where our skilled labor force will come from. I wonder how long NL has before our Christmas decorations offend someones cultural sensitivities

Judging by Dunderdale's comments, we now live under politically correct tyranny. She harkens back to a time when there was racism, but I don't remember any racism because everybody was white. it's only now that we gotta walk on eggshells because of this politically correct multiculturalism that they have sneaked in without any real public consultation. Dare we look at a Muslim the wrong way and you'll be up on charges so fast it's not funny. This is not a better society for multiculturalism. It's just a muddle.

You say "Dare we look at a Muslim the wrong way and you'll be up on charges so fast it's not funny. " Aside from being comically inept, what do you mean by wrong way? Do you think that all Muslim people are terrorists too? There are Muslim extremists that are, just as there are Christian extremists like Timothy McVeigh who blow up government buildings, by that logic, all Christians are terrorists too. Neither of us could begin to comprehend what it's like to live in one of these countries. Have you ever met anyone from Pakistan? Have you ever been outside of Newfoundland? (Let me guess, you don't need to, your type never does). I have a good friend whose family moved here from Pakistan so they could escape the non stop fear they felt, they are just like you and me, human beings who want to live a safe and good life, that's why they come here, because we live in a secure place where their kids can walk to school and not risk being shot, or having to walk by dead bodies in the streets. That's why people are finding this geriatric clown's joke offensive, because it's racist. Stupid Newfies (hahahahah)

John Crosby may be a little politically incorrect at times. But those who worship at the altar of political correctness are almost always the most racist and sexist in our society. They peddle a grotesque version of marxist-inspired multiculturalism which states that all cultures are equal , except of course for western culture and we in the west are expected to apologize forever for every imagined slight by our ancestors. We in the west will always be considered inferior by this trash.

actually this was completely inappropriate. maybe a joke is just a joke when its between da b'ys at the pub or in the gym, but when a high ranked public official makes such a tasteless joke at an official event, then its not acceptable. What if he made a joke about 'wagon burners' or 'tar babys eatin water melons'...would they be 'just a joke'? Sometimes, 'just a joke', is an opening that lets people think racial slurs are okay. how many times have I heard someone say, when speaking of an Indian or Pakistani they say that day...'that terrorist looking fella'...its ignorance and racism. I know many muslims and they are less prone to aggression than the little old lady (white Christian) next door to me. 'jokes' like this do a disservice to us all.

When there are idiots blowing up and fire bombing newspapers and murdering individuals for "caricature" depictions of a person that NO ONE has seen and maybe has never existed except in stories......it's hard NOT TO correlate....

    Gotta Laugh

Ya gotta love John Crosbie!!! Political correctness has never been his forte, and if people want to get their knickers in a knot about a joke...well...tough bananas. Crosbie has a point. There are a lot of terrorists in Pakistan.

There's a lot of uneducated morons in Newfoundland, but Newfie jokes don't belong in the House of Commons.

    Lighten up

When taken in the correct context (as a joke and nothing more) these jokes were hilarious! Good on John for adding some life to an otherwise boring "official ceremony". Lighten up people and find that sense of humor that you used to have when you were younger, when you were a kid who would find anything and everything funny...before you turned in to this uptight, politically correct, everything is going to offend me "adult". Find your sense of humor and you'll live longer, and even if you don't, you 'll have a lot more fun while you're here!!

Who is suprised? The real joke was when he was appointed. If we continue to have a LG at least it should be someone with class.

This brings back memories of the incident, which occurred in the House of Commons involving then M.P. John Crosbie and Liberal M. P. Sheila Copps. M.P. Crosbie’s inappropriate and sexist remarks made to fellow M.P. Shelia Copps, resulted in a well-merited storm of negative criticism being directed at M.P. Crosbie. Hopefully there will be a similar backlash following His Honour’s latest discriminatory remarks, which were, in this instance, directed at Pakistanis. On the other hand, the report in the Telegram didn’t indicate exactly how many people present laughed at His Honour’s so-called joke.

We've known for years that Mr. Crosbie has a rough sense of humor; if you are around him, accept it. But I'll always be his fan since he kept Gadaffi from putting up his tents on govt. grounds.

Here we go again. Trying to make a moutain out of a molehill. Get real...get a life.. If someone can't take a joke, then bury your head in the sand...or hibernate in the woods and stay there.... Maybe we should ban jokes.....what has happened to our freedom of speech.. Politicians can criticize each other to no end, yet can't take a joke. People should be use to Mr. Crosbie by now... People...lighten up......people are too serious today.... This political correctness is just getting out of hand..... If you don't look at someone today in the right way, or watch every word you say....well...need I say more.....

This clown has been in the public eye way too long. He has been telling jokes like that since the 80's if anyone can remember that far back. Such old news, time to replace this dust-bag before he keels over at the next 'luncheon'. .
