A supply vessel collided with one of the columns of a drilling rig in the White Rose oilfield Thursday afternoon, but damage to the column has not jeopardized the rig's stability, according to Husky Energy spokeswoman Colleen McConnell.
The incident happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday when the Maersk Detector made contact with a port column of the GSF Grand Banks.
The collision caused damage to the rear of the supply vessel, which was handling cargo at the time.
The breach in the port column of the rig is approximately four to five metres long, accounting for 20 per cent of the column's circumference. The damaged area has been sealed off and isolated from the rest of the rig, McConnell said.
McConnell said in both cases damage was above the water line.
"The damage assessments confirm there's no risk to the integrity of either vessel, and there were no injuries to personnel on either facility and no impact to the environment," she said.
The damaged rig was drilling the E18-11 water injection well as part of the West White Rose pilot program when the incident occurred. Drilling at the well has now been suspended.
Husky will conduct an investigation to determine why the collision took place, McConnell said, as those details were not known as of Thursday evening.
Staff of the rig have not been evacuated. Both structures involved in the incident will require repairs, said McConnell.
The GSF Grand Banks was already due for repairs after an inspection earlier this month found that the rig's choke and kill lines for its well-control system had separated at the upper housing section.
The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board made note of that problem in a bulletin issued Monday evening.
