Police are calling a tractor trailer driver a lucky man after he survived his rig overturning in a ditch, ejecting him from the cab and trapping him underneath the vehicle.
RCMP say the accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. Monday when they received a call of a tractor trailer rig off the road west of Gander.
RCMP officers responded and located the rig which had left the road on the right-hand side and overturned in the ditch. The 58-year-old driver was ejected and trapped under the vehicle. Witnesses at the scene, including two nurses who had been passing by, provided assistance.
The driver told police that he had a sneezing fit and lost control of the vehicle as he rounded a turn, struck the shoulder and rolled into the ditch.
Members of the Gander Fire Department had to cut part of the truck from around the driver to free him. The driver lost consciousness shortly after and there was concern of internal injuries. He was taken to James Paton Hospital in Gander where he remains in stable condition.
