Two women in St. John’s have been charged with assault and have been remanded in custody until today following incidents near Rawlins Cross and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital on New Year’s Day.
Chastity Ann Willingham, 35, and Catherine Philomenia Ryan, 51, both made first appearances at provincial court in St. John’s Monday morning. Both women are accused of assaulting a man Sunday near Rawlins Cross.

Sgt. Glen Noseworthy of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary told The Canadian Press Willingham allegedly went to the man’s residence that day and smashed a number of windows.
He said Willingham returned at approximately 5 p.m. and allegedly threatened the man with a knife.
She then allegedly assaulted a police officer, according to Noseworthy.
Along with an assault charge, Ryan has been charged for uttering threats and failing to comply with the conditions of an undertaking.
Willingham faces two additional assault charges — including one for assaulting another police officer — after she complained of injuries and was taken to hospital. Once there, she allegedly assaulted a hospital worker and an officer, according to the RNC.
She has also been charged for causing a disturbance, uttering threats, and for three breaches of probation.
Willingham appeared to be anxious and upset during her appearance in court Monday. When the provincial court judge read her the charge for causing a disturbance, Willingham said she called the man she was initially accused of assaulting a rapist.
“I called him a rapist — that’s what he is,” she said.
The judge then asked Willingham to listen so she could continue to read the charges.
Willingham and Ryan are both scheduled to return to court on Tuesday for bail hearings.
