A 29-year-old man from St. John's has been remanded in custody after leading police on a two-hour chase by vehicle and foot in the early hours of Sunday.
Bobby Pitcher appeared in St. John's Provincial Court Sunday morning. He has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop a motor vehicle, and breaking and entering and committing offence.
Shortly before 1 a.m. on Jan. 8, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a complaint of an alarm activation at a store on Indian Meal Line, according to the RNC's overnight report.
Police spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's vehicle a short distance from the store. An attempt was made to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle refused to stop.
This resulted in a chase heading west on Thorburn Road, north on the Outer Ring Road, into Donovans Industrial Park, right onto Kenmount Road leading to McNamara Drive, and then left onto Topsail Road.
The vehicle being chased lost control on Topsail Road and came to a stop without causing any damage. Two men ran from the vehicle.
A subsequent foot pursuit involving the RNC's K-9 unit and several officers, lasting two hours, led to the arrest of Pitcher. He is due to appear in court again on Monday for a bail hearing.
The RNC's investigation into the incident is continuing.
